Patents Assigned to Burns & Russell Company of Baltimore City
  • Patent number: 5548936
Abstract: A composite comprising two glazed angled masonry building units. Each masonry building unit includes a glazed front face including a planar portion that is opposed a back face and a second segment that intersects the planar portion. The second segment forms an obtuse angle with the planar portion and has a length that is equal to or shorter than the length of the planar portion. A side face of the building unit is angled and intersects the second segment and the back face. This side face forms an obtuse angle with the back face and an angle with the second segment of the front face. Also provided is a mold and method for producing glazed masonry building units. In addition, a wall corner composite comprising one of the glazed angled masonry units and a mitered stretcher is provided. Also included is a masonry building unit for use in constructing a structurally reinforced corner that includes a cut out portion.

  • Patent number: 4195010
Abstract: Resinous coatings of an ethylenically-unsaturated polyester are employed to form masonry blocks and tiles which exhibit resistance to fading and loss of color consistency in exterior applications. Ceramic coated quartz granules and sand particles precoated with an unsaturated organofunctional silane provide depth and softness of color and texture which when combined with a polymerizable polyester resin produce decorative fade resistant articles that also exhibit resistance to staining and moisture. The sand, granule and polyester compositions of the invention can also be formed as cast articles without masonry unit backing.

  • Patent number: 4031289
Abstract: Masonry blocks are provided with a cured resinous coating of an ethylenically-unsaturated polyester. The polyhydric alcohol in the ester is primarily neopentyl glycol to provide water resistance. The acid in the ester is isophthalic acid with 10 to 33% maleic anhydride, based on the total weight of the polyester. If the upper limit on the maleic anhydride is exceeded, stain resistance is lost. Triethyl phosphate is preferably incorporated to provide fire resistance while eliminating flame and smoke problems when employing methyl methacrylate as a polymerizable solvent. The sand-polyester compositions of the invention can also be formed as cast articles without a masonry unit backing.
