Patent number: 8307971Abstract: An apparatus includes a document track, a processing device, and a selector gate after the processing device. The document track includes a second, return path extending from a location at the selector gate to a location before the processing device. A bi-directional drive mechanism receives the document as the document passes through the selector gate in the forward direction. A gate actuator selectively moves the selector gate. Upon the bi-directional drive mechanism reversing direction after receiving the document to drive the document in the reverse direction, when the selector gate is in the first position, the selector gate diverts the document into the return path and re-introduces the document to the processing device with the document now in a reverse orientation. When the selector gate is in the second position, the selector gate allows the document traveling in the reverse direction to be re-introduced, in reverse, to the processing device.Type: GrantFiled: December 31, 2008Date of Patent: November 13, 2012Assignee: Burroughs Payment Systems, Inc.Inventors: J. Patent number: 8196830Abstract: A hand-operated document processor includes a base for receiving a document containing magnetic ink character data to be read and recognized. A manually operated moving magnetic ink character recognition (MICR) subsystem includes a MICR read head and is attached to the base such that movement of the subsystem causes the MICR read head to pass over the magnetic ink character data on the document. MICR reading and recognition logic receives the signal from the MICR read head. A speed limiting device includes a viscous damper, and is connected to the MICR subsystem. The viscous damper provides a resistance load when the MICR subsystem is moved across the document being processed. The resistance load increases as the operator increases the speed of the MICR subsystem to encourage the operator to maintain a constant scanning rate over the length of the document.Type: GrantFiled: December 4, 2007Date of Patent: June 12, 2012Assignee: Burroughs Payment Systems, Inc.Inventors: Sammy C. Patent number: 8107713Abstract: In general, this disclosure describes techniques of reducing the possibility of an image evaluation device incorrectly identifying defects in images of documents. Some defects may be apparent in the images of both sides of a document. For instance, a tear in a document could be apparent in an image of a front side and an image of a rear side of the document. However, the image evaluation device could erroneously identify such a tear in an image of one side of the document. In this case, the tear would not be apparent in the image of the other side of the document. To reduce the possibility that the image evaluation device erroneously identifies such a defect, the image evaluation device may determine whether defects identified in the image of the front side of the document correspond to defects identified in the image of the rear side of the document.Type: GrantFiled: February 25, 2008Date of Patent: January 31, 2012Assignee: Burroughs Payment Systems, Inc.Inventors: Gary A. Bickell, Robert J. D'Aoust, James J. Young
