  • Patent number: 4368734
Abstract: A surgical instrument for removing objects from the body of a human or animal in vitro in which a hook type implement is utilized to grasp a portion of the object to be removed and to bring it into a relationship with a cutting surface of another portion of the instrument to provide a combined crushing and cutting action. In the preferred embodiment of the invention, suction pressure and irrigation fluid is supplied through the instrument with the cut material being removed from the area by the suction pressure.

  • Patent number: 4321745
Abstract: An improved method of sealing and attaching, in a weathertight manner, a mounting support, such as a mounting support of an equipment, to a roof surface. A flared hole is formed in a sheet of metal flashing. The flashing is placed on the roof with the flared hole thereof aligned with a hole in the roof and protruding upward from the roof. A resilient pad is applied to the roof flashing over the flared hole, with a hole in the pad surrounding the flared hole in the roof flashing. The mounting support is then bolted to the roof surface by passing a bolt through the mounting support, the pad, and the aligned holes. The bolt engages the mounting support and the underside of the roof surface so as to secure the mounting support to the roof surface with the flashing and resilient pad pressed therebetween. This sealing technique provides a reliable water-tight seal through which water cannot readily penetrate, even over long periods of time.

  • Patent number: 4303453
Abstract: In a hydro-jet housing the form block, possibly with core, is stripped of mold sand by means of a high-pressure water jet. The sand is fed in the form of a muddy pulp to a first hydrocyclone, where the water is largely separated and is supplied for the formation of new muddy pulp. The sand flows into a scrubbing mechanism for knocking off its binding material, which has settled as a coat around the sand grains. After being scrubbed, the sand is fed to a second hydrocyclone for hydro-extracting water and dislodged binding material from the sand. The sand is then dried and cooled and is available for further use. The contaminated water is neutralized with flue gas, after which a flocculation agent is added to it and the water is then purified for reuse in a settling tank and possibly in a filter.

  • Patent number: 4271848
Abstract: Apparatus for electromagnetic radiation of living tissue, such as human tissue, or tissue simulating matter, comprises an electromagnetic radiation source having a dynamic frequency range of at least about 5 to 1, and preferably 10 to 1. Electrically connected to the source by a coaxial cable is a broadband applicator adapted for emitting electromagnetic radiation into tissue and the like. Parallel plate type radiation launching portions of the applicator are configured to have a characteristic impedance, throughout the dynamic frequency range, approximately equal to the impedance of specimens to be irradiated, which for human tissue, between 50 MHz-2000 MHz, is approximately 50 ohms. A transition for interconnecting the coaxial cable to the parallel plate launching portion is configured to provide a relatively gradual coaxial to parallel plate transition at constant characteristic impedance throughout the dynamic frequency range.

  • Patent number: 4117843
Abstract: A system for controlling the infusion of fluid to an operating field at a selected predetermined pressure, as a counterpart to an instrument for severing material of an object in the field, and for evacuating through a passage the severed material from the field in a suspension or emulsion of the infusion fluid. The system provides a means for maintaining a constant differential pressure between the operating field and its infusion line and the pressure in the line communicating with the passage through which material is being evacuated at the time a reverse fluid flow mode of operation is initiated in the system to send fluid down the passage through which the severed material is normally evacuated.

  • Patent number: 4090123
Abstract: When a regulated power supply incorporating a series pass transistor as the regulating element is crow-barred, the control circuitry continues to drive the pass transistor to maximum available current. The pass transistor may be overheated and eventually both the pass transistor and the crow-bar itself may be damaged. To prevent this latter from happening, the drive to the pass transistor is cut back in response to the actuation of the crow-bar.
