Abstract: A safety mechanism in a cigarette lighter that utilizes a multi-button system: a button and a button cover. The button has at least two elevations and is placed adjacent to the button cover. The button cover is coupled to one of the elevations of the button. A blocking element limits the downward movement of the button cover sufficiently to prevent activation of the piezo unit. To operate the lighter, the user must apply pressure to the button to operate release fuel and to operate the piezo unit to generate a spark.

Abstract: A utility lighter, which has a lighter housing, a lightening rod, and a fuel tank, has a safety mechanism comprising a safety trigger, which operates a fuel-release lever to open a valve to release fuel and has an undersurface that moves in unison with a sliding section of a piezoelectric unit and an operation section, which protrudes from the lighter housing; and ignition trigger, located within a space of the safety trigger that is parallel to the safety trigger's longitudinal axis, contacts and activates the piezoelectric unit, is capable of sliding relative to said safety trigger, and has an operation section, which protrudes from the safety trigger's operation section, and an opposing end; and a projection, which prevents the safety trigger from activating the piezoelectric unit but allows the safety trigger to release fuel.

Abstract: A utility lighter (1) with an ignition-resistant mechanism. The ignition-resistant function is performed by a cam mechanism (60) having a hub (61). The hub has three integral projections: the cam lever (80), the fuel-release lever (70), and the return spring (90). Integral to the cam lever is the safety button (120) which when depressed disengages the cam lever (80) from the stopper tab (110) of the trigger (100). The trigger (100) also has an inclined surface (111) below the stopper tab (110) which the cam lever (80) engages after the safety button (120) is depressed and the trigger (100) is pulled. Once the trigger (100) is pulled, the cam lever (80) moves along the inclined surface (111) rotating the cam mechanism (60). When the cam mechanism (60) is rotated the fuel-release lever (70) opens the fuel-release valve (31) allowing fuel to transfer through to the lighting rod (16).

Thus the safety button translates downward sufficiently to operate the fuel-release lever opening the fuel-discharge valve. However, in order to activate the piezoelectric unit the ignition button must be depressed below the level of the contact surface of the safety button.

Abstract: A disposable utility lighter for lighting BBQS, fireplaces and the like, having a child resistant device comprised of a reservoir, a spark generator for generating spark at a nozzle tip to ignite the flame by activating a trigger. Four embodiments of a child resistant device are disclosed that prevent use by children comprising buttons or switches that must first be manipulated before the lighter can be operated. In a first embodiment, the trigger release button is mounted beneath a trigger guard immediately adjacent to and above the trigger. The trigger release button allows one finger operation to pull or push upward on the trigger release button, and then nearly simultaneously pull back on the trigger. Release of the trigger re-engages the trigger release button preventing operation. In a second embodiment, a downward pressure on a trigger locking button extending through the top of the housing of the BBQ lighter disengages an abutment from the boss on the trigger allowing operation of the trigger.

Abstract: A safety apparatus of a piezoelectric lighter includes a pressure absorbing device disposed in a cap cavity of a casing of the piezoelectric lighter, a holding means integrally affixed to an interior surface of a thumb-push cap for rigidly holding one end of the pressure absorbing device in position, and a receiving means provided in the cap cavity for receiving and supporting another end of the pressure absorbing device in position. Therefore the pressure absorbing device is vertically held between the thumb-push cap and the ceiling of the casing for urging the thumb-push cap at an upper normal position thereof and providing an additional press resistance to the thumb-push cap, so as to resist a downwardly press force applied by an under age child on the thumb-push cap while an adult is capable of pushing down the thumb-push cap easily.
