Publication number: 20030205704Abstract: An AlxGa1−xAs/GaAs/AlxGa1−xAs quantum well exhibiting a bound-to-quasibound intersubband absorptive transition is described. The bound-to-quasibound transition exists when the first excited state has the same energy as the “top” (i.e., the upper-most energy barrier) of the quantum well. The energy barrier for thermionic emission is thus equal to the energy required for intersubband absorption. Increasing the energy barrier in this way reduces dark current. The amount of photocurrent generated by the quantum well is maintained at a high level.Type: ApplicationFiled: April 3, 2001Publication date: November 6, 2003Applicant: California Institute of Technology, a California corporationInventors: Sarath D. Publication number: 20030204859Abstract: The present invention is based on an in vivo animal model that mimics human cellular and tissue degenerative disorders. The animal model exhibits cellular toxicity in response to expanded polyglutamine repeat sequences. The animal model is therefore useful for identifying genes or other compounds that modulate cellular and tissue degeneration and cell survival, for example, in neural, muscle, mesoderm, kidney and other tissues associated with frontotemporal dementia, prion diseases, polyglutamine disorders and protein aggregation disorders. Genes that suppress degeneration identified using the animal model include HDJ1, TPR2 and MLF. These genes, and their human homologues, functional fragments and probes are therefore useful in treating such disorders and for diagnostic purposes. Accordingly, methods for identifying nucleic acids and other compounds that modulate frontotemporal dementia, prion diseases, polyglutamine disorders and protein aggregation disorders is therefore provided.Type: ApplicationFiled: June 18, 2003Publication date: October 30, 2003Applicant: California Institute of Technology, a California corporationInventors: Parsa Kazemi-Esfarfani, Seymour Benzer

Publication number: 20030061687Abstract: High throughput screening of crystallization of a target material is accomplished by simultaneously introducing a solution of the target material into a plurality of chambers of a microfabricated fluidic device. The microfabricated fluidic device is then manipulated to vary the solution condition in the chambers, thereby simultaneously providing a large number of crystallization environments. Control over changed solution conditions may result from a variety of techniques, including but not limited to metering volumes of crystallizing agent into the chamber by volume exclusion, by entrapment of volumes of crystallizing agent determined by the dimensions of the microfabricated structure, or by cross-channel injection of sample and crystallizing agent into an array of junctions defined by intersecting orthogonal flow channels.Type: ApplicationFiled: April 5, 2002Publication date: April 3, 2003Applicant: California Institute of Technology, A California CorporationInventors: Carl L. Publication number: 20020168693Abstract: The present invention is based on the discovery of a simplified assay for identifying modulators of ubiquitin ligase activity. This assay allows detection of compounds that affect ubiquitination and thus, cell cycle regulation in cells. An increase in ubiquitination, in comparison to a test sample lacking a test compound, indicates a stimulation of activity, whereas a reduction in ubiquitination indicates an inhibitor of activity. Also disclosed herein are methods of identifying proteins having ubiquitin ligase activity, methods of identifying substrates for ubiquitination, methods for identifying an activity relationship between a particular ubiquitin ligase and a particular ubiquitin conjugating enzyme, and chimeric proteins comprising a ubiquitin conjugating enzyme and a ubiquitination substrate, which are useful in all of the disclosed methods.Type: ApplicationFiled: July 2, 2002Publication date: November 14, 2002Applicant: California Institute of Technology, a California corporationInventors: Raymond J. Publication number: 20010042826Abstract: The present invention provides a quadrupole mass spectrometer and an ion filter, or pole array, for use in the quadrupole mass spectrometer. The ion filter includes a thin patterned layer including a two-dimensional array of poles forming one or more quadrupoles. The patterned layer design permits the use of very short poles and with a very dense spacing of the poles, so that the ion filter may be made very small. Also provided is a method for making the ion filter and the quadrupole mass spectrometer. The method involves forming the patterned layer of the ion filter in such a way that as the poles of the patterned layer are formed, they have the relative positioning and alignment for use in a final quadrupole mass spectrometer device.Type: ApplicationFiled: June 26, 2001Publication date: November 22, 2001Applicant: California Institute of Technology, a California corporationInventors: Ara Chutjian, Stephen D. Publication number: 20010030796Abstract: Opto-electronic devices and techniques using Brillouin scattering to select a sideband in a modulated optical carrier signal for amplification. Two lasers respectively provide a carrier signal beam and a Brillouin pump beam which are fed into an Brillouin optical medium in opposite directions. The relative frequency separation between the lasers is adjusted to align the frequency of the backscattered Brillouin signal with a desired sideband in the carrier signal to effect a Brillouin gain on the sideband. This effect can be used to implement photonic RF signal mixing and conversion with gain, conversion from phase modulation to amplitude modulation, photonic RF frequency multiplication, optical and RF pulse generation and manipulation, and frequency-locking of lasers.Type: ApplicationFiled: December 18, 2000Publication date: October 18, 2001Applicant: California Institute of Technology, a California corporationInventor: X.
