    Abstract: A well valve handling apparatus or kickover tool for placing a valve in or removing a valve from an offset sidepocket in a mandrel in a well tubing and having a support body, a shifting tool pivotally supported from the support body with spring means yieldably urging the shifting tool towards the sidepocket by acting against a spring base initially positioned to engage one end of the spring. After use, the base is moved out of engagement with the spring for allowing the shifting tool to pivot towards alignment with the support body.

    Abstract: A well packer for connection in a well tubing in a well in which the body has an internal diameter as great as the tubing in which it is to be inserted and has a tensile strength greater than the tubing. Packing surrounds the body and a longitudinally movable expander is positioned about the body and below the packing and is movable towards the packing for expanding the packing outwardly. Slips are positioned about the body and adjacent the lower end of the expander means and move outwardly upon movement of the slips towards the expander. An annular piston positioned about the body is longitudinally movable and on upward movement expands the slips and the packing. An annular spring is positioned above the piston and yieldably urges the piston in a downward direction whereby the packer may be set, released from a set position, and reset in the well.

The mandrel may include an orienting sleeve about the open bore above the pockets with a second set of fluid passageways offset from the open bore for providing fluid bypass passageways around the orienting sleeve.

    Abstract: A mandrel for use in a well tubing in which the mandrel body has an open bore for alignment with the well tubing and a sidepocket offset from the open bore for receiving flow control devices. An integrally forged sub is welded to the top of the body and includes an actuating shoulder angularly spaced from the axis of the offset pocket a predetermined amount and a guide surface is positioned below the shoulder and directed upwardly towards the shoulder. A deflector guide is positioned in the offset bore above the pocket and includes a pair of rails forming a guide path which allows the entrance of flow control devices in the pocket but prevents the entrance of open bore tools into the guide path. The deflector guide and the pocket are telescopically secured to each other by coacting flat surfaces for insuring transverse alignment therebetween and include abutting coacting shoulders for maintaining proper axial spacing between the locking lug and the pocket.

    Abstract: A well safety valve for controlling the fluid flow through a well tubing in which the valve closure member is controlled by a longitudinal movable tubular member which opens and closes the valve, can lock the valve in an open position, can telescopically collapse to avoid damage to the valve, and can be reset either manually or automatically. The tubular member includes first and second telescoping sections which are releasably locked together in an intermediate extended position for normally opening and closing the valve on movement of the tubular member. The releasable locking means is constructed to release upon the application of a predetermined force less than a force sufficient to cause damage to the valve whereby on application of an excessive force the sections will telescope towards each other preventing damage to the valve.

    Abstract: A drilling machine having a base supporting a pair of ways on which moves a drill tool support having a drill spindle for holding a drill tool. A hydraulic piston and cylinder assembly positioned on each side of the drill spindle for moving the tool support along the ways. A workpiece holding chuck is positioned in the middle of the support ways and the drill spindle and hydraulic piston and cylinder assemblies are positioned in the same plane with the ways for preventing torque being applied to a drill tool and maintaining axial drilling forces on the drill spindle thereby allowing a drill to drill a straight hole in a workpiece held in the holding chuck. A control system is provided for supplying fluid to the piston and cylinder assemblies, but all of the drilling forces are carried by the piston and cylinder assemblies.

    Abstract: A self-centering steady rest for supporting the free end of a cylindrical workpiece held in a chuck in a machine tool coaxially with the chuck axis. A first support including a pair of supporting rollers positioned on one side of the axis of the chuck and a second support including a second pair of supporting rollers positioned on the opposite side of the axis of the chuck from the first support. The opposing pairs of rollers are supported an equal distance from the axis of the chuck. Actuating means is connected to the first and second supports for simultaneously and equally moving the first and second supports and rollers towards the axis of the chuck for engaging and supporting the free end of the workpiece coaxially with the chuck axis. Preferably the first and second supports move in tracks in a base adapted to be slidably and movably secured to the ways of the machine tool for positioning the first and second supports adjacent the free end of the workpiece.

    Abstract: A well installation having a locator tool for installing or removing well apparatus into or from a well sub in a well tubing. The locator tool moves through the well tubing, such as by wireline or fluid pumpdown. One feature is the actuation of the locator tool by a single downward and upward movement of the locator tool by engaging an upward shoulder in a well sub thereby avoiding multiple reciprocation of the well tool which is particularly disadvantageous in pumpdown operations. Another feature is providing a distinctive configuration on the well tool and a corresponding coacting configuration on one sub whereby the well tool may be selectively actuated in the one well sub in a well tubing having a plurality of subs. Another feature is the provision of coacting orientation means between the locator tool and a well sub for orienting a well apparatus in the well tubing.

    Abstract: A fluid injection valve for use in a well tubing having an opening therein in which the valve controls the flow of fluid flowing between the outside of the tubing and the inside of the tubing through the opening. A spring-loaded relief valve element yieldably closes a port in the valve against the flow of fluid and a closed flexible pressurized chamber is provided with one end being movably positioned against the valve element. The exterior of the chamber is exposed to the valve outlet pressure so that in the event that the outlet pressure drops below a predetermined amount, the chamber will expand and act against the valve element to close the valve. The chamber may be a bellows and the cross-sectional area of the chamber is preferably greater than the cross-sectional area of the port to provide a closure force sufficient to overcome a hydrostatic head outside of the tubing.

Tool engaging means are provided on the second telescoping section for repositioning the tubular sections relative to each other or for extending the second section for locking the valve closure member in the open position.
