    Abstract: A rigid lightweight surfacing panel for providing a new surface for existing panels in acoustical panel ceiling systems, the surfacing panel having a degree of flex so to allow it to be pushed into place in a support system in underlying matched relation with an existing panel whereby a new decorative surface to impart a change in the existing decor or to decoratively replace damaged, worn or soiled surfaces can be provided without need for removing the existing panel. In a preferred embodiment porous surfacing panels are each made by combining a pair of flexible strand mats under heat and pressure with an interposed lightweight fibrous web of heat meltable binder and providing the combination with a decorative exposed surface layer which allows transmission of sound through the combination to an overlying existing ceiling panel.

    Abstract: The present invention relates to a method of installing asbestos impermeable acoustical ceiling panels to an existing suspended ceiling system, and a bracket and asbestos impermeable ceiling panel therefor. This method utilizes existing light fixture supports so that existing light fixtures and any asbestos insulation need not be removed. The method generally comprises the following steps: a) providing a plurality of brackets having base and tee portions, a leg extending from the base, and a flange extending from the tee, b) aligning each bracket so that its flange engages the lips of the existing light fixtures, c) attaching the legs to the existing light fixture supports, and d) mounting the new ceiling panels on the tee portions of the brackets. The ceiling panel comprises a layer of acoustical material with an asbestos impermeable vinyl backing secured to its upper surface and an asbestos impermeable coating applied to its edges.

    Abstract: A lay-in ceiling panel structure, comprising a glass fiber ply, a gypsum board, and a highly perforated vinyl lamina. The ceiling panel structure having noise and sound transmission reduction coefficients in the range of 0.85 to 0.95 sabins and 0.35 to 0.39 dbs respectively. This structure also provides good fire resistance, space efficiency, and a lower surface that is washable and pleasing to the eye. In addition, the glass fiber ply is secured to the gypsum board by droplets of glue which are spaced 1 to 2 inches apart and which are applied 4 to 6 inches away from the outer periphery of the gypsum board. Applying the glue in this way allows the glass fiber ply and vinyl lamina to lay flat even if the board is warped by water leaks, humidity or age.
