  • Patent number: 6334855
Abstract: An orthopedic bandage with a curable resin applied to a substrate with the cut ends of the substrate bound together with a binder-detackifier composition. The bandage is constructed by applying stripes of the binder-detackifier agent to the substrate. The substrate is then cut within a stripe of the binder-detackifier composition so that the binding aspect of the composition will stabilize the cut ends of the substrate. A curable resin is also to be applied to the substrate. The detackifying aspect of the composition allows handling of the curable resin while minimizing or eliminating the sticky or tacky feelings normally associated with resins during the curing process. The end placement of the stripes of binder-detackifier allow the user to control the amount of detackifier transferred to the gloves used by the user while applying the bandage both during cast construction and during the final formation.

  • Patent number: 5520621
Abstract: Unitary casting devices are provided for making casts and splints. In one embodiment, the device includes a padding layer for contact with the patient, a non-hydrophilic, water-permeable inner protective layer juxtaposed against the padding layer, a casting layer comprising a liquid-activatable casting material placed along the inner protective layer, a liquid-impermeable, water vapor permeable first outer protective layer juxtaposed against the casting layer and a non-hydrophilic, water-permeable second outer protective layer juxtaposed against the first outer protective layer. The device also includes means for holding the layers together to form a unitary device. In other embodiments of the unitary device, the device further includes inner and outer water containment layers including a liquid-impermeable, water vapor permeable material such that the device need not be immersible, but may contain its own supply of activating liquid or have liquid introduced into the device.

  • Patent number: 5476440
Abstract: The bandage has a substrate, a tacky liquid-curable prepolymer resin in contact with the substrate and a permeable core on which said substrate is wrapped for storage. The core of the bandage has a lubricant adapted to be released from the core such that the lubricant renders the surface portion of the substrate substantially non-tacky to facilitate molding, laminating and smoothing of a cast to be formed from the bandage. The cores have a liquid-permeable base and a lubricant in accordance with the lubricant provided to the core of the bandage. The method includes unwinding the bandage from the core, applying the bandage to a limb to form a cast, contacting the core with liquid, applying force to the core to release lubricant from the core onto the applier's hands and molding, laminating and smoothing a surface portion of the cast rendered substantially non-tacky by the lubricant on the applier's hands.

  • Patent number: 5445599
Abstract: A warp-knit casting bandage fabric is provided which comprises a first group of a plurality of individual continuous multifilament fiberglass yarns which form lengthwise extending chains of spaced-apart loops and a second group of a plurality of individual continuous multifilament fiberglass yarns which are separately interspersed with a plurality of individual continuous thermoplastic yarns forming a widthwise extending and lengthwise spaced-apart inlay which is interlaced with the spaced-apart loops forming an open-knit construction wherein the continuous thermoplastic yarns comprise from about 50% to about 100% of the total number of individual yarns forming the inlay. An elongated, resin-impregnated bandage, having a leading edge and a trailing edge, made from the warp-knit casting bandage fabric is also provided as well as a method for forming such resin-impregnated bandages.

  • Patent number: 5318504
Abstract: A unitary cast or splint forming device which has a layer of cast forming material contained within a water retaining pouch so that water added to the pouch does not wet the exterior. Padded and patient contact layers may be applied to the outside of the pouch.

  • Patent number: 5258036
Abstract: Method and materials for making a mold that conforms to a body part, such as the stump of an amputated limb. This is formed by two, or more, layers of knit fabric substrate, one or more of which is impregnated with a water activated foaming isocyanate polymer casting resin which is placed over the body part to be molded, and allowed to cure.
