Abstract: A method of treating a patient for ventricular tachycardia using a wearable defibrillator includes monitoring the patient for a predetermined condition via one or more electrodes on the defibrillator, sending a message to the patient in response to the predetermined condition, activating the defibrillator so that the defibrillator delivers defibrillation energy to the patient, and storing at least one of the results of the monitoring, sending and activating steps in a memory on the defibrillator. The method also includes downloading information stored in the memory of the defibrillator to a base station having an external interface, and transmitting the information downloaded from the memory of the base station to an external location via the external interface of the base station.

Abstract: An external defibrillator includes a detector used to detect a life threatening condition of a patient, a controller operating the defibrillator automatically and a therapy delivery circuit that delivers appropriate therapy. Advantageously a parameter is derived from the cardiac signals sensed in the patient, the parameters being used to differentiate between shockable events such as ventricular tachyarrhythmia and other events such as SVT. The defibrillator is attached to a patient by an attendant and once it is attached, the defibrillator is adapted to monitor the patient and when a life threatening condition is detected, to apply therapy automatically, i.e., without any involvement by the patient or the attendant.
Abstract: Electrode devices optimized for long-term wear in conjunction with an external cardiac defibrillator are described. In preferred embodiments the electrode devices include electrodes that consist of multiple segments, thereby providing enhanced efficacy and impedance characteristics relative to conventionally shaped continuous electrodes. In certain embodiments the conductive surface for contacting a patient's skin of the electrodes is continuous but contains regions separated by open spaces, thereby similarly providing enhanced efficacy and impedance characteristics. The electrode devices are fabricated using materials selected to minimize skin irritation and discomfort.

Abstract: A cardiac monitoring and defibrillation system is provided which may be embodied as a bedside unit or as an ambulatory unit. The system includes amplification and processing circuitry which receives and conditions inputs from a variety of sensing means such as an electrocardiogram, a blood oxygenation sensor, a blood pressure monitor, and a cardiac acoustical transducer. A noise and artifact discrimination procedure is employed to prevent erroneous detection of the onset of cardiac arrhythmias. In response to the conditioned inputs from the monitoring means, the microprocessor controls therapeutic electrical stimulus which may be delivered to a patient in accordance with a cardioverter/defibrillator step therapy method. The microprocessor may be operated or programmed by means of a control panel or an external programming and monitoring unit.
