Abstract: A system for managing loyalty incentives for a customer, including a personal loyalty account at a centralized server assigned to the customer for storing the balance of a first amount of loyalty incentives for the customer, a loyalty card carried with the customer for identifying and accessing the personal loyalty account and including a loyalty purse for storing a second amount of loyalty incentives, a first merchant terminal operable to interface with the loyalty card for awarding the customer an awarded amount of loyalty incentives by selecting whether to add the awarded amount to the loyalty purse or to add a first predefined amount of loyalty incentives to the loyalty account and receive the difference between the first predefined amount and the awarded amount from the loyalty purse.

Central monitoring of the system-level security includes statistical sampling techniques coupled with efficient tracing of the transaction path of an electronic coin back to its source. Only small amounts of data storage and transmission are utilized, eliminating the need for large centralized databases of transaction records. Consumer privacy as well as flexibility in making card-to-card monetary transfers are thereby enhanced, while allowing verification of system-wide security as well as rapid detection and tracing of security breaches. Multiple editions of electronic coins permit transparent and periodic renewal of the system and re-establishment of a security baseline, and also provide for the regular reclamation of stored value lost or abandoned by consumers.

Abstract: A payment unit is provided for serving a customer making a purchase. The customer has an electronic wallet containing an electronic checkbook for making payments for purchases of not less than a minimal checkbook payment sum, the electronic wallet furthermore containing an electronic purse for making payments for purchases of not greater than the value stored therein, the payment unit being part of a retail unit containing a point of sale for determining a purchase price. The payment unit includes a wallet interface for communication with the electronic wallet and a transaction manager.

Abstract: A heterogeneous stored-value system which offers interoperability among a number of proprietary payment card brands with differing fee structures. The system makes use of existing settlement practices and fee structures to increase the amount of commerce while imposing minimal changes. The benefits of the interoperability among different proprietary brands include reduced operating costs, since a single electronic cash pool can serve many different payment card brands. Although the electronic cash of the system is generic and is shared among the different payment card brands, the flow of electronic cash is prescribed in such a manner as to maintain an association between electronic cash (over the course of circulation) and the specific brand of payment card through which it was acquired by the customer. In this way, a transaction involving electronic cash represents a small piece of a much larger charge or debit transaction and carries its proportional share of the fees of the charge or debit transaction.
