Patent number: 4361196Abstract: A quick release, high torque coupling for interconnecting the bit and drive member in a mine roof drill has axial-locking and torque-transmitting structure integral with the drill members. A plug on the drive member is adapted to be releasably received within a mating socket in the bit and has an axial-locking segment on its outermost end complementally configured with respect to an acircular constriction in the socket to permit insertion of the axial-locking segment into the socket beyond the constriction. A torque transmitting segment on the plug cooperates with the constriction to limit relative rotation of the bit and drive member between oppositely directed torque-transmitting positions. Patent number: 4294566Abstract: A cutter insert presenting eight positive cutting edges has a generally rectangular prismatic configuration to permit its securement in a tool holder having a conventional square insert-receiving pocket. The insert has a pair of opposed primary faces, and four rectangular side faces each having a pair of coplanar, flat lands in opposite corners thereof to permit positive location and clamping of the insert. Each side face also has a laterally opposed pair of positive beveled facets formed therein and intersecting the respective primary faces to define neutral cutting edges for the insert. An elongate groove extends intermediate the beveled facets of each side face parallel to the neutral cutting edges and functions as a chip breaker to provide freer cutting and better chip control. The male shank which is received in the socket has a pair of opposed longitudinal grooves in its outer surface extending from its lower end to a point beyond the socket. The starter-driver bar and rod extensions have axial holes therethrough so that a suction or water can be provided at the lower end of the assembly. Patent number: 3985367Abstract: Apparatus for underground drilling includes a housing having a bottomed opening in its top and a hole extending downwardly through the housing from the opening. A rotatable chuck is received in the opening and has a vertical bore therethrough with non-circular upper portion for receiving a hollow drill rod, an intermediate portion and an enlarged lower portion having a shoulder at the top thereof. A compressible plug is closely received in the vertical bore and has an enlarged bottom portion with its top bearing against the shoulder and its bottom bearing against the bottom of the chuck bore. The plug has a frusto-conical upper portion which is compressed by the bottom of the hollow drill rod.
