An alternative route is computed based on a current location of the device and the identified navigation destination. The identified navigation route is compared with the computed alternative route. The alternative route is identified as preferable to the identified navigation route with respect to one or more criteria and above a defined threshold. A degree of familiarity of a user with the alternative route is determined. Notifications are generated based on the determined degree of familiarity.
