    Abstract: A barrier film composition can comprise a thermoplastic web comprising a thermoplastic polymer and a dispersed cyclodextrin composition having substituents that compatibilize the cyclodextrin in the film. The thermoplastic/cyclodextrin film obtains substantial barrier properties from the interaction between the substituted cyclodextrin in the film material with a permeant. The substituents on the cyclodextrin molecule causes the cyclodextrin to be dispersible and stable in the film material resulting in an extrudable thermoplastic. Such materials can be used as a single layer film material, a multilayer film material which can be coated or uncoated and can be used in structural materials wherein the thermoplastic is of substantial thickness resulting in structural stiffness.

    Abstract: Carbonated beverages can have a substantially reduced concentration of water soluble materials derived from biaxially oriented thermoformed beverage containers. Such containers can comprise a permeant barrier and an active trap for water soluble materials that can be removed from the thermoplastic by extraction into the carbonated beverage. The improved container material comprises a blow molded thermoplastic polyester web comprising a compatible modified cyclodextrin material having pendent moieties or substituents that render the cyclodextrin material compatible with the container thermoplastic. The cyclodextrin material, after it is added to the polymer material, acts as a barrier and to trap extractable materials as they permeate through the thermoplastic polyester. The cyclodextrin molecule has a large center cavity having properties that increase the likelihood that organic molecules will be absorbed and trapped in the center pore.

    Abstract: Nonwoven cellulosic fiber webs including, paperboards and corrugated paper board, etc., are described containing a barrier layer that can act both as a barrier to the passage of a permeant and as a trap for contaminant materials that can arise in new materials or from the recycle of fiber in the manufacture of paperboard. The effective material which acts as a trap or barrier is a cyclodextrin compound, substantially free of an inclusion complex compound. The cyclodextrin barrier layer can be corrugated or sheet laminated with or on the cellulosic web. Alternatively, the cyclodextrin material can be included in a coating composition that is coated on the surface or both surfaces of the cellulosic web after web formation. Further, the cyclodextrin material can be included in a thermoplastic film that can be used as one layer in a bilayer or multilayer laminate containing a cellulosic web.

    Abstract: The invention can comprise a thermoplastic fuel tank or container having a vapor barrier comprising a cyclodextrin composition. A modified cyclodextrin that is chemically modified with substituents that increase the compatibility of the cyclodextrin material in the fuel container material can be used. The improved fuel container obtains substantial barrier properties from the interaction between the cyclodextrin material in the fuel container materials with the fuel vapor permeant materials. The cyclodextrin in the fuel tank walls complexes or entraps fuel vapor that permeates through the materials making up the tank and are held within the tank material preventing the permeant fuel vapor from passing through the tank into the environment. The fuel vapor permeant can comprise a variety of well known materials including aliphatic and aromatic hydrocarbons, oxygenates such as tertiary butyl methyl ether, ethanol, methanol, and other combustible liquid fuel materials.
