Patent number: 6913623Abstract: An orthopedic implant includes a metal core having a first end, a second end, a first elastic modulus, and a first porosity. A proximal body is fused directly onto the metal core between the first and second ends. The proximal body has a second elastic modulus, which is less than the first elastic modulus, and a second porosity, which is greater than the first porosity. The porosity of the proximal body may vary throughout.Type: GrantFiled: August 15, 2000Date of Patent: July 5, 2005Assignee: Centerpulse Orthopedics, Inc.Inventor: Mengke Zhu

Publication number: 20040092949Abstract: A method and apparatus for performing minimally invasive hip replacement surgery using a T-handle ruler to make measurements inside the surgical site to assist in implanting a prosthetic femoral hip into the intramedullary canal of the natural femur. The ruler has an elongated central body and two measuring ends that are angled with respect to the central body.Type: ApplicationFiled: February 27, 2003Publication date: May 13, 2004Applicant: Centerpulse Orthopedics Inc.Inventors: Donald Dye, John Krause

Patent number: 6613092Abstract: A prosthetic component includes an adaptor having a first end and a second end. The first end includes an elongated male tapered body. The second end includes a flange extending radially outwardly from the male tapered body and having an anti-rotational/anatomically orientation component formed therewith. The second end also includes a female tapered aperture formed therein which has an anti-rotational/anatomical orientation component formed therewith. The flange may include an elongated portion having a porous annular surface thereon.Type: GrantFiled: July 19, 2000Date of Patent: September 2, 2003Assignee: Centerpulse Orthopedics Inc.Inventors: Richard J. Patent number: 6602292Abstract: An implantable patellar prosthesis accommodates variations in placement of the prosthesis relative to the patella without limiting use of the prosthesis. The prosthesis utilizes a base component having a fixation portion for fixation to patellar bone. Additionally, the device uses an articulation component that may move relative to the base component. A coupling mechanism is provided for coupling the articulation component to the base component while permitting relative motion of the articulation component with respect to the base component. This relative motion can be controlled according to the design of the prosthesis and facilitates implantation as well as use of the prosthesis.Type: GrantFiled: August 3, 2001Date of Patent: August 5, 2003Assignee: Centerpulse Orthopedic Inc.Inventor: Brian D. Burkinshaw

Patent number: 6602290Abstract: A device for use in ligament grafting includes a holder for receiving a ligament graft. A sheath is mounted over the holder in an expanded diameter state. The ligament graft is removed from the hollow body with the sheath so that the ligament graft is captured in the sheath in a reduced diameter state and a substantial length of the sheath extends from opposite ends of the graft.Type: GrantFiled: November 19, 1999Date of Patent: August 5, 2003Assignee: Centerpulse Orthopedics Inc.Inventors: Philip Stuart Esnouf, Bruce Richard Tylden Love

Patent number: 6589285Abstract: Surface irregularities are removed from the inner wall of a femur cavity, preferably tapered. A tamp having an opening and a socket is disposed in the cavity. The tamp may be one of a plurality of tamps each having a different length for the opening. A guide, one of a plurality, fits snugly in the opening. The guide has a collar which cooperates with the tamp socket to limit the movement of the guide into the tamp. A working portion of each guide below the intermediate position has a bulbous shape which is tapered in accordance with the femur taper. Bone fragments between the guide working portion and the femur inner wall are packed against the inner wall when the tamp and the guide are driven into the femur cavity. Numerals on the guide adjacent a slot in the tamp indicate the disposition of the guide in the tamp.Type: GrantFiled: November 20, 2001Date of Patent: July 8, 2003Assignee: Centerpulse Orthopedics Inc.Inventor: Brad L. Penenberg

Patent number: 6551321Abstract: An orthopedic implant includes a pair of spaced apart end caps which are interconnected by a plurality of elongated flexible members. Each end cap includes an aperture formed therethrough for the use of a trochanteric guide wire for piloting the implant during trial insertion and final insertion into an intramedullary canal. At least one of the end caps includes a rounded end to enhance insertion. Preferably, the flexible members are bowed outwardly to provide a “birdcage” configuration.Type: GrantFiled: June 23, 2000Date of Patent: April 22, 2003Assignee: Centerpulse Orthopedics Inc.Inventors: Brian D.
