  • Patent number: 4531043
Abstract: Method of and apparatus for stabilizing a plasma stream by the use of two different stabilization liquids. The plasma arc is stabilized in the discharge chamber by a whirl of a first stabilization liquid containing at least one element chosen from the group consisting of carbon and nitrogen, and the plasma arc is stabilized in the stabilization channel by a second stabilization liquid differing in its boiling point from the first stabilization liquid. Between the discharge chamber of the burner and the stabilization channel there is provided a transition space from which there lead outlets for the stabilization liquids. In the transition space there may be place an orifice plate dividing said space into two sub-spaces. From the stabilization channel upstream of the front nozzle of the burner there may be provided an outlet for the second stabilization liquid, which is disposed in the stabilization channel.

  • Patent number: 4529615
Abstract: The present invention relates to a method of producing self-supporting constructional elements by plasma-spraying onto a removable core.Recently, there is in widespread use the method of producing constructional elements, especially of heat-resistant elements of rotary shape, by plasma-spraying of ceramic oxides onto a removable core. Existing problems in the art are caused by the slow removal of an intermediate layer, which separates the deposited constructional element material from the core, in suitable solvents, and the necessary neutralization of the produced constructional element. These disadvantages are overcome by the method of the present invention characterized in that a core is preheated to a temperature in the range of from about 200.degree. C. to about 650.degree. C., a metallic or non-metallic intermediate layer having a thickness of about 0.1 to about 2 millimeters is deposited on the core by plasma-spraying.

  • Patent number: 4439588
Abstract: The invention relates to polymers and copolymers of pivaloyloxyalkyl methacrylates which contain structural units of the general formula ##STR1## where R.sup.1 is (CH.sub.2).sub.n.sbsb.1 --O (n.sub.1 =2 to 10) or (CH.sub.2 CH.sub.2 --O).sub.n.sbsb.2 (n.sub.2 =1 to 4) and to the method of their preparation and modification. The polymerization and copolymerization can be initiated by free-radical initiators of the peroxy type or by anionic initiators, e.g., alkali metal alkoxides or butyllithium, and carried out in a solution, bulk or suspension process in the presence of a crosslinking agent or without it. Anionic polymerization may result in stereoregular polymers or may be used for preparation of block copolymers by the "living" polymer technique. The polymers and copolymers can be modified by the partial or total conversion of the pivaloyloxyalkyl methacrylate units into hydroxyalkyl methacrylate units by selective hydrolysis, alcoholysis or other reaction.

  • Patent number: 4427808
Abstract: The invention relates to a composite polymeric material suitable for biological and medical applications and to the method for preparation thereof. The composite material consists of 1-99 wt. % of hydrophilic polymer or copolymer based on methacrylic or acrylic esters, 1-99 wt. % of fibrillar collagen, and up to 2.5 wt. % of a crosslinking agent, based on both polymeric components. The composite material may further comprise biologically active compounds and other auxiliary materials, as fillers and/or plasticizers. The composite material is prepared by dispersing the fibrillar collagen in a solution or a highly swollen dispersion of the synthetic hydrophilic polymer or copolymer in a lyotropic agent and the subsequent removal of the lyotropic agent, thus forming a matrix of the synthetic polymer or copolymer penetrated by fibrillar collagen or vice versa. The composite material may be applied on a solid support or reinforced with glass, plastics, cellulose, or metallic materials.
