    Abstract: A method of removing metal or metalloids, arsenic in particular, from groundwater or another source of contaminated water. The method comprises providing a water source, contacting the water source with CO2, whereby the pH of the water source is lowered to produce pretreated water, contacting the pretreated water with a metal or metalloid complex-adsorbing substance whereby contaminants are separated from the remainder of the pretreated water to produce metal or metalloid-depleted water, and stripping the CO2 from the metal or metalloid-depleted water, whereby the pH of metal or metalloid-depleted water is increased. A system for metal removal utilizing the CO2 process is also provided.

    Abstract: A method for treating a fluid by providing raw fluid to a process tank, adding an ion exchange resin to the process tank to form a raw fluid/ion exchange resin mixture, removing treated fluid from the process tank through a membrane filter located within the process tank, and regenerating the ion exchange resin within the process tank. The method may be set up as a batch process or as a continuous process using a magnetic ion exchange resin and continuous withdrawal of the magnetic ion exchange resin from the process tank by use of a magnetic separator. The method may also consist of reusing the regenerant in multiple regeneration steps and periodically filtering the regenerant to restore its regenerative properties. Alternatively, an upflow bed of ion exchange resin may be used to treat the raw fluid before membrane filtration.

    Abstract: A method of modifying the vertical profile of a cable supported bridge. The method consists of sequentially adjusting a lower end of a series of supporting cables downward relative to the bridge superstructure and sequentially adjusting an attachment structure associated with the lower end of each cable to maintain the distance each cable has been adjusted. The adjustments preferably proceeds according to a pre-specified plan known as an adjustment sequence. The preparation of an adjustment sequence according to the methods disclosed allows the modification of the vertical profile of the bridge superstructure to be completed without overstressing any bridge members, and with predictable results.

    Abstract: An apparatus for forcing airflow through (i.e., aerating) a particulate material consists of a planar bearing surface and a ventilation conduit underlying the planar bearing surface. A plurality of delivery conduits extend between the ventilation conduit and the planar bearing surface with a mouth of the delivery conduits being near the planar bearing surface. A grate, defining a plurality of openings, covers the mouth of each delivery conduit. Each grate has a top surface substantially parallel to the planar bearing surface and positioned at or no more than a select distance below the planar bearing surface. This select distance is close enough to the planar bearing surface to prevent the accumulation of particulate material over the grate as the particulate material is scraped from the planar bearing surface with an implement having a linear edge abutting the planar bearing surface.

A gas conduit is associated with each liquid absorber to allow for the recycling of properly conditioned gas to the VOC source. A conduit is connected to each liquid absorber for conveying VOC laden scrubbing liquid from the liquid absorber to a separating apparatus in fluid communication with each of the conduits. A conduit recycles the scrubbing liquid from the separating apparatus to at least one of the plurality of liquid absorbers. A heat exchanger associated with the scrubbing liquid after separation transfers heat to the scrubbing liquid prior to separation, or to an HVAC system, or to the scrubbing liquid prior to the liquid absorber.

    Abstract: A new process configuration, which is based on nitrifier bioaugmentation, achieves essentially complete nitrification at low solids retention times (SRTs) on a year round basis for plants that have a minimum of two activated sludge treatment trains. The process utilizes a membrane bioreactor as a second stage activated sludge system for one of the existing activated sludge systems, which is operated under non-nitrifying conditions. The membrane bioreactor is used to achieve essentially complete nitrification of ammonia derived from influent wastewater and an anaerobic digester recycle stream. The mixed liquor of the membrane bioreactor is comprised of an enriched culture of nitrifying bacteria. To allow the other treatment train(s) to nitrify, the waste sludge from the membrane bioreactor is directed to “donated” to the other “receiver” train(s).

A membrane filter is provided in the downstream aerobic zone so that it functions as an immersed membrane filter with a bioreactor containing an operative volume of wastewater and activated sludge. The immersed membrane filter filters treated water flowing from the bioreactor through a first outlet. An aerator is operative associated with the membrane filter for purging solids from the membrane filter.

    Abstract: A biofilter apparatus includes at least one container having a height, length, and width containing a deep, low density, porous media within the container. An airflow apparatus is constructed and arranged to deliver a flow of air to be treated to the filter media. The airflow apparatus provides at least 37.5 cfm/ft2 with the porous media creating a backpressure of not more than about 10 inches of water. The media preferably consists of about 30-40% shredded tree bark particles, about 30-40% shredded wood, and about 30-40% composted wood sized such that 95% of the media will pass through a three inch screen and be retained by a 0.5 inch screen. A fluid mister may be provided in fluid communication with the flow of the air to be treated for introducing humidity to the air. The method for treating air via biofiltration utilizes the biofiltration apparatus discussed above and includes directing contaminated air into the container through the airflow apparatus and through the media at at least 37.

    Abstract: A portable and reconfigurable composting apparatus for controlling the airflow to and from a plurality of aerated static composting piles. The composting apparatus includes an air blower having an air intake and an air output. A suction manifold is attached in fluid communication with the air intake of the blower. A discharge manifold is attached in fluid communication with the air output of the blower. A plurality of pile manifolds are connected to the suction manifold and the discharge manifold by a manifold crossover. The manifold crossover includes a pair of dampers which allow the composting apparatus operator to independently select positive or negative air pressure for application to each pile manifold. Each pile manifold is operatively associated with an aerated static compost pile, by means of a series of flexible air lances attached in fluid communication with a pile manifold.

A valve in fluid communication with the coolant supply and the outside air cooling coil circuit has an open setting for permitting and a closed setting for preventing the circulation of coolant through the outside air cooling coil circuit. An HVAC unit control is operatively associated with the valve and the damper for controlling their operation. An occupancy control generates a signal indicating the presence of a human within the conditioned space and is operatively associated with the HVAC unit control.

Each pile has a proximal end driven sufficiently deep into the bed to be substantially fixed against horizontal movement and pivoting at the proximal end about a lengthwise axis upon application of a horizontal load. A plate has a hole corresponding to each distal end of a pile, the hole having a diameter sufficient to actually receive a corresponding distal end of a pile while allowing for rotation and translation of the distal end of the pile relative to the plate. An extraction port in the cover defines a clear channel into the well pipe for sampling and monitoring equipment.
