  • Patent number: 4361236
Abstract: A one-piece carton construction used to mail and store checks includes a double front, bottom, back and top wall. A double side wall construction is hingedly connected to the front and rear walls by web corners adapted to be folded along a diagonal. Each side wall construction also has a tab which is frictionally locked against the bottom wall of the carton between the front and back walls to retain the double wall side walls and front, rear and bottom wall panels in a substantially rectangular parallelopiped configuration. Checks are placed within the rectangular parallelopiped enclosure and the top wall is folded downwardly about the back wall to form a cover for the carton. The top wall has a tuck flap hingedly connected to its front edge and a pair of rupturable panels connected to opposed side edges of the top wall. Each rupturable panel includes a tear strip bounded by cut score lines and a terminal adhesive panel.

  • Patent number: 4360107
Abstract: A carton erected from a one-piece paperboard carton blank permits a frozen pizza to be heated in a microwave oven while still in the carton. The carton has a bottom panel in contact with the pizza crust, the bottom panel having openings to permit venting of steam vapor during heating and the openings forming cross-straps to support the crust. The openings are sealed by a closure panel prior to heating and portions of the closure panel open like shutters on a window and are used, during heating, to support the carton above the oven shelf.

  • Patent number: 4360145
Abstract: A corrugated, one-piece, die-cut packing pad for insertion into opposite sides of a shipping carton for cushioning and supporting a device transported in the carton and spacing and precluding movement of the device relative to the sidewalls of the carton. The pad has a central, substantially solid front panel inserted between the transported device and a sidewall of the carton and a plurality of relatively pivotable, upright, hinged posts attached to opposite side edges of the front panel which when folded relative to each other in accordian style contact the sidewalls of the carton and serve to clamp the device between the front panels of the pads inserted between the opposite sidewalls of the carton and the device. A top panel is hinged to spaced portions of the top of the front panel and foldable 90.degree. relative thereto to overlie the device during shipment to provide cushioning for the top of the device during shipment.

  • Patent number: 4356950
Abstract: A two-piece paperboard carton including a tray portion having an open top for receiving a plurality of articles, such as cotton swabs. A rectangular cover sleeve is slid over the tray portion so as to retain the swabs within the tray. The sleeve includes a generally elliptically-shaped opening substantially closed by a transparent, plastic sheet which is spaced from opposite score lines of the sleeve and is perforated along a line or seam perpendicular to the adjacent score lines. In order to gain access to the cotton swabs and dispense the same from the tray, the film is separated into two halves along the perforated seam. Upon removal of a swab from the tray through the seam in the film, the film will return to its initial position to create a dust barrier for the swabs remaining in the tray.

  • Patent number: 4356953
Abstract: A one-piece tray cover is provided with corner ledges that maintain the cover in an elevated position with respect to the top edges of a bottom tray on which the cover is positioned. The tray cover can also function as a supporting base for the tray bottom. When so used, the cover is inverted with its opening facing upward. The bottom tray is then placed inside the upward facing opening of the inverted tray cover. When used as a support base, the corner ledges serve to support the tray bottom in an elevated manner. The height of the corner ledges is less than the overall height of the tray cover. The corner ledges may be provided with a tapered edge resulting from a back-to-back fold along two non-parallel crease lines.

  • Patent number: 4355755
Abstract: An improved tray particularly suited for packaging food is formed by drawing a unitary blank of paperboard and includes an outwardly extending flange along the upper edge of the tray to provide a face to which a plastic cover sheet is bonded. Arcuately shaped troughs are formed in the face of the flange at each corner of the tray and a plastic cover sheet for enclosing the top of the tray, after the tray is filled with food, is ultrasonically bonded to the arcuately shaped troughs at each corner with matching sonic sealing heads. The sonically vibrating heads divert foods accidentally spilled into the troughs during the filling process from the troughs thereby improving the bond between the film and the plastic surface of the tray. Heat is applied to the cover sheet at the flange after ultrasonic bonding to assure complete sealing of the cover sheet to the flange.

  • Patent number: 4355757
Abstract: A carton, and a blank for forming the same, is disclosed which is adapted for storing and heating a food product such as a pizza. The carton includes a bottom wall defined by a bottom panel and closure panel, disposed in abutting and coplanar relationship. The bottom panel is provided with a plurality of venting apertures. In use, the closure panel is rotated away from the bottom panel such that a pair of elevator panels extend therebetween. The closure panel thereby defines a base for supporting the bottom panel in spaced relationship to the bottom of the oven. Further, the venting apertures are uncovered allowing moisture to escape from the carton while the pizza is being heated.

  • Patent number: 4354630
Abstract: An automatic lock bottom carton with a pyramid closure is disclosed having two tabs extending from two panels that lock into corresponding openings on tabs of oppositely presented panels. The double lock prevents the collapsing of the pyramidal shape so that it can support a product in its intended form. The carton can be of single cell or multiple cell structure with one of the pyramid sides derived from the center divider.

  • Patent number: 4349124
Abstract: A composite tray is formed from top and bottom press formed tray members. The top tray member includes a base and sidewalls, and a plurality of embossments or raised surfaces are formed on the base thereof, while the bottom tray member also includes a base and sidewalls, with a plurality of debossments formed on the base thereof. The bottom tray member is of slightly larger dimensions than the top tray member such that the top tray member may be fitted within the bottom tray member and affixed thereto. The opposed bases of the top and bottom trays cooperate to inhibit unwanted twisting or flexing of the composite tray, thereby enhancing the structural rigidity of the tray. In a preferred embodiment of the subject invention, the bases in the top and bottom tray members are disposed in mirror image relationship to further rigidify the composite tray. Polymer coatings may be provided on the exposed surfaces of the composite tray to provide a moisture-liquid barrier.

  • Patent number: 4348346
Abstract: Disclosed is an improved process for extruding films of thermoplastic polyester film-forming materials. The process enables extrusion of films with reduced problems of neck-in, edge-weave and beading, by laminar flow feeding a small amount of a polymer into the extruder die in the area near both edges of the elongated die opening. The polymer laps said edge portions and thereby provides a controllable edge, which may be cut from the film after drawing the film from the die, and an increase in the usable film area for a given weight of polymer.

  • Patent number: 4344537
Abstract: An expandable carton and a blank for forming same has top and bottom panels which are coupled by a self-locking expanding arrangement along three respective side edges of the top and bottom panels. At the fourth side edges of the top and bottom panels, closure flaps are hingedly coupled to close and lock the carton in its expanded or assembled configuration. This permits the carton to be shipped and stored in essentially flat, collapsed configuration, and then easily assembled and closed by simple manual operations without gluing. The carton may be opened by a tear strip arrangement to gain access to the carton interior.

  • Patent number: 4344814
Abstract: A multi-piece, tub shaped paperboard container having a circular opening in the top thereof is provided with a multi-piece, reinforced rim coated with a layer of meltable plastic and is assembled by appying heat to overlapping seams in order to melt the plastic coating and thereby seal the seams. Heat is applied evenly around the entire periphery of the rim by a 2-piece, annularly shaped, heated collar which may be selectively shifted into conforming engagement with the container. The even application of heat around the entire periphery of the rim equalizes the surface tension of the plastic coating during melting thereof to avoid deformation of the rim during the heat sealing process.
