  • Patent number: 4469155
Abstract: An apparatus is disclosed for peeling logs to produce veneer sheet. The apparatus utilizes concentric spindles and dogs to grip the ends of the logs being peeled with the outer spindle and dog being retractable away from the ends of the logs after the outer portion of the log has been peeled. The innermost dog gripping each end of the log is smaller in diameter than the spindle on which it is mounted so that a greater percentage of the log can be peeled by the apparatus. The apparatus is particularly useful for increasing the percentage of veneer sheet obtained by peeling small logs, i.e., logs having a diameter of ten inches or less.

  • Patent number: 4469258
Abstract: A tray is formed from coated paperboard or plastic and is provided with a top peripheral flange onto which a tray lid is sealed. The tray lid includes an inner membrane member which is secured to the tray flange by an adhesive coated into the membrane. Also included in the lid is an outer paperboard member which is adhesively secured to the membrane and tray flange. The outer lid member can be peeled off of the membrane without the membrane releasing from the tray flange. The membrane can then be peeled off of the tray flange to open the tray. A method for forming the sealed trays is also disclosed.

  • Patent number: 4464841
Abstract: A dimension board for gauging the dimensions of cutsize paper with holes includes a generally planar measurement surface, first and second guides attached to the measurement surface and having respective first and second abutment surfaces intersecting the measurement surface along respective, perpendicular, first and second lines of intersection. A plurality of sets of gauge lines may be disposed along the first line of intersection beyond the first guide, along the second line of intersection beyond the second guide, and at the intersection of a pair of lines extending parallel to the first and second lines of intersection but separated therefrom by the desired dimensions of the sheet of paper, whereby when the sheet of paper is placed in abutment with the first and second abutment surfaces, the dimensions of the sheet of paper can be checked against the sets of gauge lines.

  • Patent number: 4460091
Abstract: An elongated, plastic resealing clip is provided for a bag containing a flowable product and comprising a plurality of panels hingedly coupled along fold lines, an opening at one end of the bag, and a flap hingedly coupled to one panel along a fold line for overlapping an opposite panel and closing the opening. The clip is U-shaped in transverse cross section with a bight for engaging the flap fold line and depending legs for pressing the flap against the opposite panel. An adhesive layer extends across the entire width of the flap to seal the flap to the opposite panel. The adhesive layer seal can have a reduced bonding strength adjacent one end of the flap to facilitate opening of the flap at the reduced bond strength section. The reduced bonding strength is provided by an adhesive coating comprising kaolin clay. This arrangement is particularly useful in heavy weight bags which are sealed by a hot melt adhesive.

  • Patent number: 4456131
Abstract: A remote controlled slack pulling log skidding carriage is provided for feeding a slack drag line toward a log to be skidded. A drive sheave rotatably mounted in the carriage is operated by a hydraulic motor. The fluid to operate the motor is stored in one or more accumulators, and a radio controlled valve starts and stops the flow of fluid to the motor. A mechanically operated hydraulic pump also is provided to recharge the accumulators during a skidding operation. A reciprocating locking assembly is provided to alternately lock the carriage to the skyline or to the slack line.

  • Patent number: 4455115
Abstract: A mechanism for stacking and weighing sheets fed from a semi-continuous sheet cutter. The mechanism includes a hydraulic cylinder operatively connected to a stacking table so that as sheets are deposited onto the stacking table, the table is lowered by indexing the hydraulic cylinder. This continues until a full stack of sheets, having a predetermined number of sheets determined by weight, by height of the stack or by sheet count has been stacked on the table. The hydraulic cylinder comprises a hydraulic fluid reservoir, an electrically driven hydraulic pump, a four-way, three position hydraulic spool valve, a hydraulic cylinder and back pressure safety valve. A load cell connected between the hydraulic cylinder and the rest of the mechanism is connected to a scale device which will weigh the stack of sheets.

  • Patent number: 4455184
Abstract: This invention provides a process for the lamination of a polyester, particularly polyethylene terephthalate, to a paperboard substrate which comprises coextruding a polyester layer and a polymeric adhesive layer onto a paperboard substrate. By use of this process, well adhered coatings of polyester can be obtained where the polyester is used in amounts as low as 10 pounds of polyester per ream. The adhesive layer can be pigmented thereby providing visual enhancement of the laminate product. Moreover, the paperboard can be treated with sizing agents or the like without serious adverse effects on the adherence of the polyester layer. Laminates produced in accordance with this invention are less costly than those of the prior art as they include less polyester per unit of surface.

  • Patent number: 4453665
Abstract: An expandable food such as popcorn is sealed within a pouch formed of a substantially oxygen-impermeable, flexible, synthetic high polymer film which is dimensioned so as to fit for storage and efficient cooking of the food product in an outer bowl-like protective paperboard container. The outer container and pouch can be heated in a microwave oven and the expandable pouch and food is supported and confined in the bowl of the outer container, from which the food can be consumed. The outer container is formed from a unitary blank which can be partially erected and shipped in a flat, knockdown condition to a food processor for filling with the food pouch. The base of the outer container is provided with self-locking tabs to prevent the bowl-like container from collapsing and returning to its knock-down, shipped condition after fully erected and filled with the food pouch.
