  • Patent number: 4166799
Abstract: This invention relates to apparatus for forming a gaseous mixture comprising a carrier gas substantially saturated with vapors of a normally liquid chemical material, under conditions of high throughput. The apparatus of the invention is adapted to pass a carrier gas through a normally liquid chemical material in a pressure vessel, while controlling the temperature and pressure of the system, thereby controlling the concentration of the vaporous, normally liquid chemical material in the carrier gas and to assure the formation of a substantially saturated gaseous mixture. Before exiting the pressure vessel the initial dispersion of carrier gas and chemical material is contacted with means adapted to retard passage of liquid chemical substance from the pressure vessel and to enhance the degree of saturation of the carrier gas. The invention is also directed to the use of a gaseous mixture of curing agent and carrier gas to cure low temperature curing sand molding compositions.

  • Patent number: 4149222
Abstract: A bed light safety apparatus which includes a normally wall mounted lighting fixture. The upper rearward edge of the fixture is pivotally mounted to a plate adapted for attachment to a wall. One embodiment of the apparatus includes a switch carried by the fixture. When used in conjunction with a hospital bed or the like which is power operated to a raised position, the switch is made a part of the electrical circuit for the bed drive means. In the event equipment carried by the bed strikes the fixture on raising of the bed, the consequent pivotal movement of the fixture causes the switch to open the circuit to the bed drive means and halt further raising of the bed. In other embodiments the safety apparatus may include visual or auditory alarms actuable by a switch in the fixture.

  • Patent number: 4126177
Abstract: A heat exchanger for rapidly heating or cooling materials such as fluids containing fragile, discrete particles of varying sizes without substantial damage to the particles. The exchanger has inner and outer heat transfer surfaces that define an elongated annulus. Located in the annulus is a pair of opposed, spiral, inner and outer ribs which do not span the annulus and which, upon rotation, move the material toward the exchanger inlet against the flow therefrom which overflows the ribs and moves from rib to rib and to the outlet. Scraper blades associated with the ribs, scrape the exchanger inner and outer surfaces.

  • Patent number: 4122343
Abstract: In a method generating correlative data from various products of thermal degradation of biological specimens and comprising sequential steps for each specimen of degrading such specimen by heating such specimen so as to cause various products of thermal degradation of such specimen to be evolved, ionizing the products of thermal degradation of such specimen by a technique causing negligible fragmentation, detecting ion currents for such specimen, and recording such detected ion currents, an improvement is attained wherein each specimen is heated in an identical non-isothermal time-dependent heating sequence, wherein a three-dimensional array comprising a large and sufficient number of ion currents, which correspond to substantially all detectible ratios of mass-to-charge within a range at a large and sufficient number of successive instants during the respective heating sequences, are detected and recorded for each specimen, and representative data from the three-dimensional array thus recorded for each one o

  • Patent number: 4115679
Abstract: An electromagnetic oven is provided with a control system comprising a ferrite sensor located within the oven, a magnetic property detector coupled to the sensor, and control means responsive to signals from the detector. The sensor is positioned on a tray together with the items to be heated and this assembly is preferably cooled to a uniform low temperature before the tray is placed in the oven. The sensor is thus subjected to the same thermal environment as the items on the tray so that when the tray is placed in the oven the time required for the sensor to reach its Curie point and shut off the oven is dependent upon the thermal "history" of the items on the tray.

  • Patent number: 4111671
Abstract: A method and related apparatus for separating carbon dioxide snow from a mixture of carbon dioxide snow and vapor is disclosed. A mixture of carbon dioxide snow and vapor is introduced into a rectangular conduit which has an inlet end, an outlet end, a discharge orifice and continuously increasing cross-section from said inlet end to said discharge orifice. At least a portion of the conduit between the inlet end and the discharge orifice is curved to define a flow path for the mixture such that carbon dioxide snow tends to be concentrated for flow in a concentrated stream through said path. Means for deflecting a portion of the mixture after it passes through said discharge orifice is also provided.

  • Patent number: 4098853
Abstract: A humidifier system for delivering breathing gases such as air or oxygen from a respirator, anesthesia machine, oxygen source, or the like to a patient under controlled conditions of temperature and humidity is disclosed. The humidifier comprises a support housing adapted to receive a removable water tank, the housing also containing a low water sensing system, a water heating means, and a system for sensing and for regulating the temperature of the water in the tank. The tank includes an air inlet leading to a diffuser chamber, from which air flows through a diffuser plate, through the water to the humidifier, and thence to an outlet for delivery to the patient. The diffuser plate incorporates a plurality of cone-shaped apertures which create air turbulence in the water so that as the breathing gases are forced through the water tank under positive pressure, the gases are uniformly heated and humidified prior to delivery.

  • Patent number: 4096858
Abstract: A respiration unit for supplying a preselected limited volume of breathing gas to a patient at limited positive pressures, and at a preselected limited flow rate is disclosed. The system includes an air delivery cylinder having a drive weight which is free to move up and down. A diaphragm connected to the weight divides the cylinder into an upper control chamber and a lower delivery chamber. A vacuum source is connected to the control chamber through a first solenoid-controlled valve to regulate the lifting of the weight, and a second solenoid-controlled valve regulates the bleeding of air into the control chamber to release and regulate the rate of fall of the weight, thereby driving breathing gas under pressure out of the lower chamber. A control system regulates the lift and lower cycles of the drive weight to provide the required operation of the system, with various sensors being provided to allow patient control of the system under selected conditions, and to assure patient safety.
