Abstract: Flameproofed thermoplastic synthetic resins, elastomeric synthetic resins, rubber-type synthetic resins, thermosetting synthetic resins, and elastomers have both halogen- and antimony-containing flameproofing components, the latter having the formula Sb.sub.4 O.sub.5 X.sub.y, wherein X is chlorine, bromine, or sulfate and y is 2 or 1.
Abstract: Polypentabromostyrene with a bromine content of 76% to 80%, which is plastic at a temperature of 280.degree. C. and is thermally decomposed at a temperature of about 400.degree. C., can be produced by reacting pentabromophenylethyl bromide with an alkali metal hydroxide or carbonate in an alcoholic solvent and subsequently by catalytically initiating polymerization. The polypentabromostyrene is useful as a flame retardant for thermoplastic synthetic resins.

Abstract: Tetrabromophthalic acid esters of pentabromobenzyl alcohol with a softening temperature of 270.degree.-280.degree. C. and a bromine content of about 75% by weight and of a tetrakis(bromomethyl)-o-xylylene glycol with a softening temperature of 220.degree.-230.degree. C. and a bromine content of about 67% by weight are good flame retardants for synthetic resins.
Abstract: A flameproofing additive for thermoplastic synthetic resin compositions comprises 60-30 wt. % of a lower melting, flame retardant organic bromine compound which melts at 80.degree.-200.degree. C. and 40-70 wt. % of a higher melting, flame retardant organic bromine compound which melts at 280.degree.-400.degree. C., each of the flame retardant, organic bromine compounds being thermally stable at the processing temperatures to which the thermoplastic synthetic resin is to be exposed after being combined with the flameproofing additive.
Abstract: The generation of dust in a longwall mining operation is suppressed by covering the hanging wall of the mine with a plastic sheeting, the sheeting being pinned against the hanging wall by the support units used in the mine and being held in association the support units in the form of a flat package formed by folding the sheeting in a zigzag fashion along its entire length.

Abstract: Bromated phenylglycerin ethers, prepared by reacting a brominated phenol with 2,3-epoxypropanol-1 in the presence of an alkali at elevated temperatures, are useful flame retardant agents for phenol resins and phenolic resin laminates when used in amounts of about 3 to 30 parts by weight per 100 parts of resin.
Abstract: In producing successive batches of halogenated 2,2-bis-(4-hydroxyphenyl)-propane by reacting bisphenol A with elemental halogen in acetic acid wherein the mother liquor of a preceding batch is used as the reaction medium, the improvement comprising adding to the mother liquor an acetate such as sodium acetate to react with free hydrogen halide in the reaction medium and to increase the yield.

Abstract: A new process has been devised for the application of a mixture of calcium or magnesium chloride and a non-ionogenic wetting agent for the prevention of the spontaneous ignition of coal, especially during underground mining operations, by applying the same to the surface of the coal. The process involves boring of holes into the out-cropping coal and then forcing the mixture of calcium or magnesium chloride and wetting agent in an aqueous solution which contains 25 to 35% by weight of the mixture through the bore holes. A constant quantity of about 3 to 6 liters of solution per minute is pressed into the bore holes, the pressure being only sufficient to overcome the counter pressures occurring in the coal. The procedure greatly extends the time of effectiveness of the prevention of spontaneous ignition of the coal and eliminates to a large extent the expenditure of labor for supervision and retreatment of the surface of the coal now being experienced.
Abstract: A process for the production of halogenated carboxylic acid amides wherein an amide of the unsaturated aliphatic carboxylic acid is reacted with an anhydrous hydrogen halide and an epoxide compound is added to the reaction mixture and after cooling, the precipitated halogenated carboxylic acid amide is separated.

Abstract: Calcium-sodium-phosphates suitable for animal feed use are produced by heating a granulated mixture containing 1.75 to 2.25 moles calcium oxide and 1.25 to 0.75 moles sodium oxide per mole of P.sub.2 O.sub.5 for at least 10 minutes to between 600.degree. to 1,000.degree.C, while being subjected to vigorous movement and cooling to room temperature.
