Abstract: Disclosed is a lubricating oil additive composition which imparts improved oxidation properties to internal combustion engine crankcase lubricants which comprises:(1) an antioxidant selected from aromatic or alkyl sulfides and polysulfides, sulfurized olefins, sulfurized carboxylic acid esters and sulfurized ester-olefins, and(2) an oil-soluble chlorinated hydrocarbon containing at least 6 carbon atoms.Lubricating oil compositions containing this additive composition are also disclosed. Particularly preferred are compositions which also contain an oil-soluble zinc salt.
Abstract: Disclosed is a process for reducing the fouling in a heat exchanger in which a hydrocarbon stream is heated or cooled as it passes through the heat exchanger. From 1 to 500 parts per million of a polyalkylene amine is added to the stream to reduce fouling.

Abstract: The amount of NO.sub.x formed during regeneration of a cracking catalyst in the presence of a metallic carbon monoxide combustion catalyst is decreased without substantially adversely affecting the carbon monoxide combustion activity of the promoter by subjecting the combustion-promoting catalyst to steam treatment prior to employing it in the cracking catalyst regeneration operation.

Abstract: Refrigeration or heat pump apparatus containing working fluid consisting essentially of refrigerant and lubricant, said refrigerant being a halo-substituted hydrocarbon of 1 to 3 carbon atoms and preferably at least 40% by weight fluorine, and said lubricant being mineral lubricating oil, poly-alpha-olefin lubricating oil, synthetic alkylbenzene lubricating oil or mixtures thereof containing the combination of higher fatty acid and arylphosphate in a minor amount, sufficient to improve the wear-inhibiting properties of said lubricant and to improve the resistance of said lubricant to decomposition.
Abstract: A catalyst composition having an intrinsic surface area above about 60 square meters per gram as measured by the BET nitrogen adsorption method, said catalyst comprising from about 1 to 30 weight percent of a finely divided silica component, and from about 1 to 99 weight percent of a hydrogenating component comprising copper in either elemental or compound form and zinc oxide.
Abstract: A continuous process is disclosed for the retorting of shale and other similar hydrocarbon-containing solids of a broad particle size distribution in which the solids to be retorted are introduced into an upper portion of an elongated vessel with a solid heat transfer material at an elevated temperature. The hydrocarbon-containing solids and heat transfer material, a portion of each being fluidized, pass downwardly through the retort under substantially plug-flow conditions, countercurrent to an upwardly flowing stripping gas. Retorted solids and heat transfer material are withdrawn from the bottom of the retort vessel and a product stream of hydrocarbon vapors mixed with stripping gas is recovered overhead.
Abstract: Hydrocarbylpoly(oxyalkylene) aminoesters which are monoesters of a hydrocarbyl-terminated poly(oxyalkylene) alcohol and a monocarboxylic C.sub.2 -C.sub.20 (amino-substituted) alkanoic acid find use as fuel and lubricating oil additives.
Abstract: Apparatus for jet-cleaning wells having different-diameter casing strings, which apparatus includes an elongated member for running into the well, and a movable member having a jet body for forming a jet connected to the elongated member, which movable member moves out against the casing string responsive to application of jetting liquid between the movable member and the elongated member.

Abstract: A tensiometer apparatus for use in the field, for instance at the site of an oil well, for measuring the interfacial tension between two immiscible fluids, for instance oil and water, wherein a droplet of one fluid is caused to move under the force of gravity through the second fluid and a characteristic of the droplet is determined by measuring the change the droplet causes in capacitance of one or more capacitors as the droplet moves through the second fluid. The determined characteristic is then converted by calibration means to interfacial tension between the fluids.
Abstract: Fuel compositions for internal combustion engines are provided containing deposit control additives which maintain cleanliness of intake systems without contributing to combustion chamber deposits. The additives are hydrocarbylpoly(oxyalkylene)aminocarbamates comprising a hydrocarbyl-terminated poly(oxyalkylene) moiety composed of 2-5 carbon oxyalkylene units and one or more 9-30 carbon oxyalkylene groups. Certain additives also find use as dispersants in lubricating oils.
Abstract: Hydrocarbylpoly(oxyalkylene) aminophosphorylamido esters are monoesters and diesters of polyether alcohols and phosphoramidic acids. The esters find use as lubricating oil additives which impart lubricity to the oil.
Abstract: A process is provided for removing a bisulfite salt from an aqueous solution by chemisorbing the salt onto a macroreticular organic compound containing carbonyl functional groups and regenerating the compound.
Abstract: 1-Halo-2-alkylthioethyl and 1-halo-2-arylthioethyl sulfones, having algicidal and fungicidal activity, are prepared by the addition of arylsulfenyl or alkylsulfenyl halides to alkyl or aryl vinyl sulfones. The thioethyl sulfone products are treated with a base to produce 2-alkylthiovinyl or 2-arylthiovinyl sulfones, which also have algicidal and fungicidal activity. The vinyl sulfones are halogenated to produce 1,2-dihalothioethyl sulfones, which have superior fungicidal activity, especially for tomato and celery late blight.
Abstract: Quick setting, anionic bitumen emulsion compositions, suitable for road paving, recreational surfaces, etc., are formulated by emulsifying the bitumen in water with an ammonium or alkali metal salt of a hydrocarbon-substituted sulfuric, sulfonic, phosphoric or phosphonic acid emulsifier, mixing the emulsion with a fine aggregate and, prior to spreading the aggregate emulsion mixture, introducing an alkaline earth metal set initiator. The resulting composition rapidly breaks to a hard cohesive structure, so as to permit early use by traffic.
Abstract: A blowout prevention system for an offshore structure positioned on the underwater bottom in a body of water which contains moving ice masses that could force the structure off location wherein a surface blowout preventer stack for conventional well control is connected to the upper end of a riser with the lower end of the riser being disconnectably connected to a subsurface blowout preventer stack which provides the necessary well control should the structure be forced off location. The subsurface stack is positioned on a wellhead located in a chamber in the subsea bottom and is disconnectably connected to the riser so that the riser may be quickly removed from the subsea bottom should the structure be forced off location.
