  • Patent number: 6154817
Abstract: A device and method for managing storage media is disclosed herein. The storage media is initially associated with a first set or a second set in the device. The device comprises a managing device for executing selectable storage rules. The selectable storage rules are for determining a first storage media, initially in the first set, to which data is to be stored. The managing device is also for executing selectable usage rules, wherein the selectable usage rules are for determining a second storage media, initially in the second set, to be transferred from the second set to the first set.

  • Patent number: 5832208
Abstract: A software agent for detecting and removing computer viruses located in attachments to e-mail messages. A client-server computer network includes a server computer and a plurality of client computers. A message system, located at the server computer, controls the distribution of e-mail messages. An anti-virus module, located at the server computer, scans files for viruses. The agent is located at the server computer and provides an interface between the anti-virus module and the message system. The agent can operate both on a real-time basis and at preset period intervals. E-mail messages that are sent internally within the network can be scanned, e.g., Intranet e-mail messages. In addition, e-mail messages received over the Internet can be scanned.

  • Patent number: 5797016
Abstract: A system for updating an agent used in a backup software program. The backup software program operates on a network having, for example, a server and a number of workstations. A backup engine executes on the server. An agent executes on each of the workstations to be backed up. The backup engine transmits an updated agent to each workstation, transmits an executable regeneration module to each workstation and transmits an execute command to the agent at each workstation. The agent at each workstation stores the updated agent and the executable regeneration module and causes the execution of the executable regeneration module. The executable regeration module deletes or renames the agent, and also renames the updated agent to the name of the agent and thereafter enables operation of the updated agent as the agent.

  • Patent number: 5673381
Abstract: A method and system for parallel back-up of a plurality of client computers on a network, in particular, a local area network or wide area network. Each client computer has a local storage device that stores files. A number of back-up storage devices are organized into groups, with each back-up storage devices being a member of one group. A server computer is coupled to the plurality of back-up storage devices by a bus and is also coupled to the network. The server computer for executing a back-up job. The server computer accepts parameters for the back-up job, the parameters including a source parameter specifying a set of the client computers and a destination parameter specifying a group. The server computer receives files from each one of the set of client computers specified in the source parameter in parallel. Each received file is stored on one of the back-up storage devices being a member of the group specified in the destination parameter.

  • Patent number: 5564037
Abstract: A system and method for real time data migration in a networked computer system uses a known operating system feature, a sparse file, to represent a migrated file. The sparse file consumes a minimum amount of physical space on the file server but is defined as having the same size and attributes as the original final. When a user accesses a migrated file, the file appears to be resident on the file server and is automatically and transparently returned to the file server from an optimized storage location in a hierarchical storage management system.
