  • Patent number: 5183267
Abstract: An oil seal unit for disposition between mating parts having opposed end face sealing surfaces. The seal unit has a casing with a radial flange having opposed end face surfaces and an inner margin portion. An elastomeric seal body with radially inner, outer and intermediate body portions is bonded to the casing. The seal body includes a radially space apart, continuous circular sealing ribs over lying each face of the casing; the seal body also has a radially inner portion defining an opening through which the shank portion of the mating part extends. The intermediate part of the seal body includes a collar element which deforms into snug fluid-tight sealing engagement within a recess defined in part by the seal and in part by portions of the mating parts.

  • Patent number: 5183269
Abstract: A unitized, fluid seal assembly for heavy duty applications. The seal assembly includes a primary seal unit, an annular wear sleeve, and a separately formed thrust bumper made from a stiff but resilient, high temperature resistant, lubricous plastic material. The thrust bumper has a body with opposed, tapered surfaces meeting to define a narrow band that contacts the radial end face of a radial flange on the wear sleeve or the primary seal casing. The primary seal unit includes an elastomeric seal body with primary and excluder lips, and the wear sleeve includes an additional excluder lip contacting a portion of the primary seal casing.

  • Patent number: 5176215
Abstract: A composite drain plug comprising a metal plug element and an elastomeric seal element. The plug element includes a body with a head portion defined in part by exterior, tool-engaging flank surfaces, a radially enlarged, seal positioning flange with an outer diameter surface and a seal-engaging end face surface. The plug also includes a threaded fastening shank, and a depth stop shoulder with a radial end face surface and an axial offsetting surface. The elastomeric seal element includes a seal body integrally bonded to the positioning flange and to offsetting shoulder surface on said depth stop. The seal body also includes a radially extending, axially inwardly directed end face primary sealing surface, lying axially inwardly of the end face of the depth stop.

  • Patent number: 4934668
Abstract: A multi-purpose seal assembly for a gas-pressurized spring including a rigid positioning unit and an elastomeric body portion covering part of the positioning unit. The positioning unit is of generally annular form with a cylindrical outer diameter alignment surface and an inner diameter cylindrical guide surface. The elastomeric body portion includes spaced apart bevelled surfaces tapering toward each other to define an annular, radially outwardly acting static seal lip, and at least one pair of bevelled surfaces tapering towards each other to define a radially inwardly acting primary sealing lip.

  • Patent number: 4738606
Abstract: A mold assembly for making fluid seals. The mold includes an outside diameter surface on a fixed part and a seal flange support surface on another portion of the fixed part. A seal casing with a shouldered mounting flange having major and minor outside diameters and a radial flange is positioned in the fixed mold part. A movable mold member includes an upper, outer cylindrical surface for engaging the inside surface of the casing major diameter to form a flash barrier which moves during mold closure. Both the fixed mold part and the movable mold part include inwardly directed surfaces defining the mold cavity; the flange support is apertured for the elastomer to flow from the seal body-forming part of the cavity to the heel gasket-forming part of the cavity. The heel-forming cavity part lies between the lower part of the inside surface of the mold and the outer surface of the casing minor diameter.

  • Patent number: 4613005
Abstract: The present invention is directed to a grit exclusion and oil retention seal for use in extremely hostile environments. These environments include, but are not limited to sealing oil within cavities forming parts of earth drilling bits and the like. Seals such as these, include the ability to seal oil within a cavity in a reliable manner even under extreme conditions of vibration, mechanical shock, and the presence of grit, sand, water, dirt and mixtures thereof. In order to function properly in this environment, the seal must also provide a certain amount of axial end play so that relative movement of the sealed parts will not permit the seal to leak.In this connection, a heavy duty seal of the type with which the invention is concerned must provide not only a primary or relatively moveable seal, but also a secondary seal. The seal assembly must include means for transmitting torque from the housing or carrier to the primary seal rings.

  • Patent number: 4531748
Abstract: An improved seal assembly which provides a seal having a unitizing element adapted to fit over one portion of a sealed mechanism and a primary seal assembly adapted to be received within or with respect to another sealed part which moves relative to the first sealed part. The seal includes a unitizing or locking flange made from a reduced thickness or skirt portion at the end of the wear sleeve on the unitizing element, such flange being axially offset from the seal contact band. The assembled seal is made from a casing unit, an elastomer which provides a mounting surface an a resiliency imparting element, together with a bonded fluoroelastomer ring which is assembled protectively with a unitizing casing which includes a wear sleeve portion having one radial flange thereof forming a protective element and the other being a unitizing flange made from an end portion of the wear sleeve.

  • Patent number: 4073540
Abstract: A hub cap assembly for vehicle axles which includes a rigid hub cap body with a sidewall portion and a radially inwardly directed flange having a window therein so that the lubricant level in the axle housing can be seen without removing the hub cap. The window is received by a flange having inner and outer axially directed surfaces and an inner edge defining an opening in the cap body. The window unit includes a transparent central panel and a mounting portion comprising first and second annular, generally axially extending window-mounting flanges which are spaced radially apart from each other so as to define an annular seal-receiving groove. One window-mounting flange has an axially facing end portion snugly received against the outer axially directed surface, and another window-mounting flange extends partly through the cap body opening. The other or second window-mounting flange includes a locking device with a part which snugly engages the inner axially directed surface of the flange.
