Patent number: 4536849Abstract: A machine operation monitor is provided for detecting malfunctions during execution of a machine cycle of operation irrespective of the activity being performed. Load levels of machine member driving means are periodically sampled and compared against limits computed by the monitor. The limit calculation uses net force or torque measured by storing load level samples during two preparatory executions of the machine cycle of operation. During the first execution a finished workpiece is produced using good tools. During the second execution no workpiece is present. The differences between load level samples taken during these two executions represent the net force required to perform work on the workpiece. The monitor responds to synchronization signals to maintain correspondence between load level samples taken in successive executions of the machine cycle. The monitor also responds to monitor off signals to suspend monitor operation during periods of no activity in the machine cycle.Type: GrantFiled: September 8, 1982Date of Patent: August 20, 1985Assignee: Cincinnati Milacron Inc.Inventors: Donald J. Patent number: 4529371Abstract: A mold changer for an injection molding machine has a carriage with two mold stations mounted next to the molding machine. The carriage is movable parallel to the tie rods (or platen movement) of the molding machine to position a selected work station in register for mold changing. There are rollers on the machine platens and at each carriage work station to support the mold weight while permitting lateral movement of the mold into or out of the machine or carriage as part of mold changing. Separate drive means to power such lateral mold movement are on each of the machine and carriage. Each of the drive means selectively moves a mold the first part of the way from the device in which it is mounted (i.e. machine or carriage) into the other device (carriage or machine) and at some point the drive means in the receiving device assumes driving and completion of the mold change. The mold is constructed and arranged to engage and disengage the drive means.Type: GrantFiled: June 6, 1984Date of Patent: July 16, 1985Assignee: Cincinnati Milacron Inc.Inventor: Thomas A. Nickley

Patent number: 4457688Abstract: A blow molding machine is provided with an external center pin so that blowing is accomplished without introducing a mechanical or rigid member within the preform and/or bottle. To do this, the blowing is done by introducing a fluid, preferably a gas such as air, into the preform to expand it. Outside of the preform, meanwhile, is the subject center pin or center rod which is located on the preform center line (axis) and near the middle of the preform bottom. The rod receives a gate disposed centrally on the bottom of the preform when the preform is expanded by the entering fluid. In this manner, the center part of the bottom of the preform is engaged by the center pin which thereafter keeps the preform on center as the blowing action continues. A process is disclosed of blowing using a compressed fluid alone inside the preform to expand the preform axially against the bias of an external resiliently biased center pin.Type: GrantFiled: February 3, 1982Date of Patent: July 3, 1984Assignee: Cincinnati Milacron Inc.Inventors: James W.
