  • Publication number: 20130337764
Abstract: Systems and methods for providing alerts to end users of networked enabled portable devices are provided so that the end users are made aware when broadcast emergency alerts are issued. The systems and methods provide a way for a portable device to receive information about an emergency alert broadcast of which the user should be aware, e.g., from the EAS, and to notify the user of the emergency alert. A flag provides an indication the EAS should be on and the systems and method override the settings made by a user to a portable device to enable EAS reception. The user may then be automatically taken to the emergency alert information by having the portable device automatically tune to the emergency broadcast information, or the user may optionally retrieve the emergency information by tuning to the emergency broadcast channel, or the user may otherwise be presented with a reference to the emergency data (e.g., a link to the information).

  • Publication number: 20130189965
Abstract: A system that automatically delivers telephony network services from a dual mode service technology platform to an external entity. The system includes a sensing component that detects the presence of a mobile handset registered on a cellular network, and registers the mobile handset with a wireless access network. Further, a provisioning component identifies calls to subscribers that are provisioned for the requested telephony network service. Once the calls are identified, the provisioning component extracts the requested data from the incoming calls and routes the data to an external entity for display.

  • Publication number: 20120246700
Abstract: A SIP (session initiation protocol) service activation abstraction layer that provides a unified interface to upper layer applications for discovering, establishing, and managing the QoS connectivity. In one implementation, this is IP Multimedia Subsystem-centric, further supporting applications that utilize SIP for session control. This capability extends to the data card universe allowing UMTS data card vendors to establish concurrent QoS-based sessions using multiple primary PDP (packet data protocol) contexts based on a set of SIP triggers, further allowing applications running on a computing system to transparently utilize the established pipes based on the individual QoS requirements.

  • Publication number: 20120064920
Abstract: A system, method and apparatus for creating and implementing a privacy zone around a mobile object are described herein. A privacy zone is a geographic location proximate to a mobile object in which mobile device functionality is reduced when a mobile device is inside the boundaries of the privacy zone. A locator subsystem tracks the location of the mobile object to update the location of the privacy zone. Further, the locator subsystem monitors for mobile devices that may interface with the privacy zone. Once a mobile device is found to be within a privacy zone, the pre-determined mobile device features will preferably be disabled.

  • Publication number: 20120046024
Abstract: A mechanism is provided whereby a parent, or other second party, can monitor and/or control a child's or other first party's wireless device usage. An interface can allow the parent to set rules for the child's usage, and can specify that the parent should receive messages when a call is made to or from the child's wireless device. In addition to call information, the message may prompt the parent for approval of the call connection. Thus, a parent can decide whether a call that is incoming from or outgoing to a third party should be permitted.

  • Patent number: 8089339
Abstract: Methods and wireless devices for providing secure operation of a vehicle. In one such method, a key for accessing a vehicle is detected, a vehicle operation policy associated with the key is retrieved, and operation of the vehicle consistent with the vehicle operation policy is permitted. The key may be embedded within a wireless device such as a cellular telephone. The vehicle operation policy may include an access control rule that may indicate to enable, partially enable, or disable a vehicle operation feature. Where the intended operation of the vehicle is not consistent with the access control rule, the operation may not be permitted and an enforcement action may be taken, such as disabling a feature of the vehicle.

  • Publication number: 20100331147
Abstract: Methods and systems for use in connection with a fitness routine and/or an exercise apparatus. In one such method, fitness information is stored in a fitness analysis system and operative communication is established with an exercise apparatus and/or a wireless communication device. A fitness information request is received at the fitness analysis system, and the system sends a setting associated with the exercise apparatus to facilitate a workout using an exercise apparatus. The system receives exercise information corresponding to the workout, and updates fitness information during the workout. The updated fitness information is analyzed to generate associated with the exercise apparatus to facilitate a subsequent workout.

  • Patent number: 7796578
Abstract: Queries for IP addresses associated with a telephone number are conducted in accordance with query flags contained with an ENUM record. A query flag indicates the type of query to be initiated against the DNS databases. The query flag provides a means for interpreting the domain name portion of the URI contained in the ENUM record. Query flags provide an explicit indication as to the type of query to be performed against the DNS and provide an explicit indication as to how the domain name portion of a URI in an ENUM record should be interpreted. Query flags also provide guidance pertaining to subsequent actions to be performed. The use of query flags eliminates ambiguities associated with making assumptions about the domain name contained in an ENUM record. Thus, the use of query flags can reduce latency, reduce the load on transmission links, and reduce processing load on network elements.

  • Patent number: 7764946
Abstract: SMS alert messages are provided to the current geographic location of a registered SMS subscriber. When an SMS subscriber's mobile device is registered, the subscriber's profile is analyzed to determine if the subscriber wants to receive alert messages via SMS. If so, cell sites associated with the current location of the subscriber are utilized to provide alert messages. As the subscriber register's his/her mobile device in other geographic locations, the current location of the subscriber is updated.

  • Patent number: 7764245
Abstract: A multi-band antenna for use in a wireless communications network provides frequency support for different wireless technologies in a single structure. This substantially reduces installation costs and can be the only solution in limited space installation sites. In one instance, the multi-band antenna has two serial feedlines carrying respective anode and cathode components of RF signals. Each, comprising serial feedline is coupled to two or more different length dipole elements. Each dipole element of a given length attached to the first serial feedline has a corresponding dipole element of approximately equal length attached to the second serial feedline and oriented, with respect to the first dipole element so as to form a dipole. Thus, at least two dipoles of differing lengths are formed, enabling performance in two different bands by the antenna. The gain of the antenna for any particular band is determined by the number of dipoles corresponding to that band contained within the antenna.

  • Patent number: 7747239
Abstract: SMS based alert messages are routed to subscribers via a Mobile Switching Center (MSC) such that SMS alert messages can be provided to specific cell sites. Also, SMS alert message can be provided to all subscribers registered in a specific cell site, including roamers. When an MSC receives one alert message, it routes that one message to all subscribers known to the MSC. In an example embodiment, an emergency alert message along with an indication of the alert area is received by an emergency alert server. MSCs capable of facilitating cellular coverage for the alert area are determined. Cell ID (cell sites) associated with the MSC are determined, and the alert message is routed to subscribers currently registered in the cell ID.

  • Publication number: 20100122318
Abstract: A policy-based management mechanism is provided, whereby the mechanism provides for at least the controlling of access to network resources, the integration of different frameworks into a common open standard, and modular components for assembling integrated date and voice services. The mechanism accomplishes this by using an access management component that checks for access credentials, a service management component that identifies which resources are available to a requestor of resources, and a resource management component that manages the requested resources. In one exemplary implementation, a fourth component, the policy management component links the first three components such that a resource request gains access to resources based on policy decisions determined by the fourth component for the first three components.
