  • Patent number: 5891553
Abstract: A film having a width of at least about one foot as defined by the cross machine direction thereof and a substantially uniform average thickness of less than about 10 mils is formed of a crosslinkable thermoplastic olefin polymer, a crosslinking agent, and preferably a flame retardant. The film can be combined with a suitable substrate to form a prepreg or coated substrate, and the prepreg or coated substrate can be subsequently treated under conditions to crosslink the olefin polymer and to form a rigid composite structure. The composite structure is particularly useful for printed circuit board applications.

  • Patent number: 5836715
Abstract: A structural member for reinforcement of asphalt and concrete roadways and other products, and which comprises a gridwork of warp strands and weft strands which are disposed at right angles to each other and so as to define an open structure. In one embodiment, the gridwork is impregnated with a thermosettable B-stage resin so as to interlock the strands at their crossover points and maintain the gridwork in a semi-flexible state, and after being applied to the product to be reinforced, the resin is heated to convert the same into a fully cured composite to thereby rigidize the gridwork and reinforce the product. In cases where the product to be reinforced is heated, such as asphalt paving, the heat of the product provides the heat necessary to fully cure the resin in situ. In another embodiment, the resin is fully cured to rigidize the gridwork prior to its being applied to the structure to be reinforced. A method of producing the resin impregnated gridwork is also disclosed.

  • Patent number: 5788907
Abstract: The invention provides fabrics having improved ballistic performance and processes for making the same. The fabrics include a network of consolidated multifilament yarns formed of high strength filaments. At least a portion of the high strength filaments of the yarns are temporarily locked together to provide a substantially stable, flattened cross-sectional configuration to the yarns. The resultant fabrics are capable of absorbing an impact from a projectile, i.e., a bullet or shrapnel, directed toward the fabric and substantially decreasing its velocity. The fabric can also provide slippage or movement of the yarns relative to one another to dissipate the energy of impact of a projectile across a greater surface area of the fabric.
