  • Patent number: 9010965
Abstract: A system is provided having a multiplexed laser source which combines the outputs of multiple lasers into multiplexed illumination which is then externally modulated to provide output illumination having reduced or zero speckle. Each of the laser sources are turned ON and OFF (gated) in a timed sequence to provide multiplexed illumination having a time-averaged speckle contrast that is lesser than the speckle contrast of the output of any one of the lasers. The output of one or more lasers may also be wavelength multiplexed, where the lasers operate at different wavelengths, and/or polarization multiplexed. An external modulator receives and modulates the multiplexed output in phase and/or modal power distribution to further reduce the speckle in the output of the system. The multiplexed laser source and external modulator can be used as separate apparatuses for reducing speckle in laser illumination.

  • Patent number: 8681260
Abstract: An imaging system or camera having an array of elements switchable between two states for measuring of light received by the imaging system on a pixel by pixel basis to form two separate images simultaneously over a common integration time in which switching takes place faster than the integration time of the camera. Optical switching may be provided by a spatial light modulator along one of two paths each associated with a detector for one of the images, or each path being associated with one of two non-overlapping regions of the same detector, where each region provides one of the images. Electronic switching may be provided in which for each pixel a photodetector provide an electrical signal onto a switching element which switches the signal onto one of two sites for integrating the signal and providing a pixel value, where the two sites are each associated with a different one of the images.

  • Patent number: 8064491
Abstract: An apparatus for generating short optical pulses is provided having a storage medium capable of storing optical energy, a first module for delivering pumping optical pulses or continuous beam into the storage medium to energize the storage medium, and a second module for delivering one or more trigger optical pulses to the optical storage medium. Each of the trigger optical pulses has a rising edge which causes a cascade release of the energy stored in the storage medium in an output optical pulse having a greater power and narrower in width or duration (at full width at half maximum) than the trigger optical pulse that caused the output pulse. A control module in the apparatus controls the operation of the pump module and trigger module so as to provide the desired characteristics of output optical pulses from the apparatus.
