Abstract: A method of operating a communication system is disclosed. The method includes transmitting from a remote unit to a base station remote unit channel data. The remote unit channel is generated at the remote unit and includes data about a first portion of communication channels on which the call can be executed. The method also includes applying a channel selection method to the remote unit channel data and to base station channel data so as to select a communication channel from among the first portion of communication channels. The base station channel data is generated at the base station and includes data about a second portion of the communication channels. The method further includes executing a call on the selected communication channel.

Abstract: A network having an access service network (“ASN”) configured to provide full mobility to mobile stations located within a service area. The ASN includes a Layer 2 or data link layer network that is larger, incorporates more nodes, or carries more data communications than Layer 2 networks incorporated in prior art ASNs. Data communications to and from the mobile stations are routed inside the ASN across the Layer 2 network which transports the data communication using a Layer 2 protocol. If the network includes another ASN located adjacent to the first ASN, the two ASNs may communicate directly with one another over a Layer 2 connection. If the network includes another ASN that is not adjacent to the first, Mobile Internet Protocol components may be included in the ASNs and configured to provide mobility between ASNs.
Abstract: Following initial call establishment negotiation to build a call context between a network and a remote unit, the base processes the header of the data packets. The base acts as an intermediate nodal point to establish call contexts with the endpoints on the traffic channels, wherein the processing of the header of the data packets is terminated at the base. The base processes only the header field that needs to be transmitted along the payload, and transfers the processed portion along with the payload. A session is then established between the remote unit and the network, and the traffic resumes from both ends.

Abstract: Polling methods for use in a communication system, such as a fixed wireless communication system, are described. The fixed wireless communication system includes at least one wireless base unit and a plurality of fixed-location wireless transceiver units, where each transceiver unit is, for example, located at a home residence and coupled to a personal computer (PC). In one particular polling method, a wireless transceiver unit detects a failure of a primary energy source, switches to a battery backup for power, and sends a message to the wireless base unit indicating such failure. The message initiates the wireless base unit to poll the wireless transceiver unit on a periodic basis for status information. During the failure, a data traffic channel established between the units is torn down to conserve power at the wireless transceiver unit. Once the primary energy source is restored, the data traffic channel is brought back up and the periodic polling is terminated.
