  • Patent number: 5197530
Abstract: Flat metal products are pressure cast in a mould having two lateral walls each consisting of a support and of a graphite block as well as several spacers, including an upper spacer interposed between the blocks. The ends of the upper spacer and of the front spacer are inserted between two half-shells intended to receive a header of molten metal at the end of the cast. Elastic members carried by the supports exert during the cast, a clamping force of the half-sheels on the spacers. After the start of solidification of the slab, the clamping force is reduced by lateral jacks which eliminate any resistance to contraction of the slab and thus prevent the formation of cracks at the slab/header transition.

  • Patent number: 5143145
Abstract: The frame of a mould comprises at least one rigid transverse structure element disposed in a zone which is substantially distant from the ends of the frame. The transverse element comprises two end parts between which are disposed support beams of the lateral moulding walls. Jacks each fixed on an end bearing part of the structure element are connected via their movable rod to the beam in zones which are distant from the longitudinal ends of the beam. The jacks make it possible to achieve both the displacement of the walls between their opening and closing positions and the clamping of the mould. Restriction of the clamping stresses is provided by the structure element. The bending moment of the beams remains low since the points of application of the stresses on the beams are distant from the ends of these beams and chosen as a function of the clamping conditions of the mould.

  • Patent number: 4989437
Abstract: A method and apparatus for extruding metal using the reverse method in which a billet placed in the bore of a container is compressed between a base and an extruding block. Billets are extruded in the raw state without prior removal of the outer layer, leaving a play sufficient to form a sleeve of a thickness at least equal to that of the outer layer to be removed, between the periphery of the block and the inner face of the bore, along the inner face. The bore is then scraped, using a scraping block whose periphery is separated from the inner face of the bore by a play which is less than the thickness of the sleeve but sufficient for the sleeve to be removed over a part only of its thickness.

  • Patent number: 4914795
Abstract: A mill roll with a deformable casing comprises a tubular casing (1), a fixed support (2) and a set of elements (3) for holding the casing in the radial directions. At least one chamber (9) fed with high-pressure fluid is formed between the fixed support (2) and each of the holding elements (3). The end of the holding elements (3) is separated from the inner surface of the casing (1) by means of a fluid film occupying a zone (12) in the form of a sector of a ring. The zone (12) is in communication, at one of its ends, with a low-pressure fluid feed duct (14) and, at its other end, with a fluid recovery duct (15). This results in the formation of a hydrodynamic bearing during the rotation of the casing (1), which is fed completely independently of the high-pressure supply to the chamber (9).
