Abstract: A system and method is disclosed for composting feces and treating. Human feces is collected within a composting retainer and exposed to sufficient air and water to allow the feces to compost, thereby forming compost product. Urine is collected within an urine treatment retainer which is at least partially partitioned from the composting retainer and wherein the urine is passed through a substrate supporting aerobic nitrifying bacteria, thereby nitrifying a significant portion of the ammonium ions in the urine to form liquid product. The compost product is suitable for subsequent use, such as fertilizer or for use in forming a mixture with soil to form topsoil.

Abstract: A liquid waste reduction system uses an evaporator having two packed columns. A reservoir of the evaporator has three level sensor which monitor the fluid level in the reservoir. An input pump delivers waste liquid to the reservoir. When the fluid level has exceeded a low level, a control unit powers an output pump which pumps liquid from the base of the reservoir to an external storage unit. A distributor pump pumps liquid from the reservoir to the top of the packed columns. A blower forces air upward through the packing material to evaporate water from the liquid. When the fluid level has exceeded a high level, the control unit switches on a heating element which heats the air delivered from the blower to the second packed column, thus accelerating the evaporation process. When the fluid level has exceeded the maximum level, the control unit deactivates the input pump to prevent flooding of the evaporator unit.

Abstract: A new portable system is disclosed for composting feces and for treating urine includes a composting retainer which includes a composting means for exposing the feces to sufficient air and water to allow the feces to compost, thereby forming a compost product. A urine-treatment retainer with aerobic nitrifying bacteria disposed on a substrate whereby urine is treated by the bacteria, thereby forming a liquid product. A means is available for transporting the portable system.

Abstract: A system and method is disclosed for distributing greywater to a soil bed without significant erosion of the soil bed. An interior tube defining at least one aperture is disposed within an exterior tube. The interior tube and the exterior tube are immersed in a soil bed for aerobic decomposition of greywater discharged from the greywater distribution apparatus into the soil bed. The apertures of the interior tube are sealed from the soil bed when greywater is not being discharged into the soil bed. Directing greywater into the interior tube at a sufficient pressure causes greywater within the interior tube to be directed through the apertures. The exterior tube baffles the flow of greywater through the apertures, thereby diminishing the velocity of the greywater. The greywater then passes between the interior tube and the exterior tube and is discharged from the exterior tube through a slot which extends along a substantial portion of the exterior tube.

Abstract: A composting toilet disposes of quantities of liquid wastes by providing ingress and egress means for air into and from a housing for the wastes. Within the housing is means for conducting the air into the path of liquid waste being sprayed, to entrain or evaporate such waste into the air and pass it from the housing.
