  • Patent number: 6578691
Abstract: A ultra-low stiction torque transfer device (10) having a pair of relatively rotatable members (14, 16) actuated by a fluid-actuated diaphragm actuator (72). The diaphragm (72) features a circular or annular planar extensible web (74) having an O-ring (76, 78) positioned at each peripheral edge hereof for sealing a fluid communication space (86). Each O-ring (76, 78) is received, but not clamped, between a groove (87, 89) having an inclined wall (107, 109) and a lip (88, 90) overhanging the groove (87, 89). A portion of each O-ring (76, 78) makes a sealing contact with the respective inclined wall (107, 109) to seal the fluid communication space (86). The web (74) is extended by the application of fluid pressure to the fluid communication space (86). The extending web (74) moves a piston (18) which urges the relatively rotatable members into frictional engagement. As the web (74) extends, each O-ring (76, 78) rotates and translates within its respective groove (87, 89).

  • Patent number: 5950786
Abstract: A disc clutch assembly for transmitting torque from a torque source to a torque destination is provided, which includes a first plate with apertures and a second plate located between the torque source and the first plate, where the second plate is in driving engagement with the torque source. Fastening members are used to secure the first plate to the second plate. Located between the first and second plates are a driving plate with apertures and a driven plate which has a frictional surface and an interface for engaging with the torque destination. A resilient member is secured to the first plate to provide force toward the torque source and to release the force. Substantially dowel-shaped members are positioned adjacent the driving plate and are slidable through the apertures of the first plate to be adjacent the resilient member.

  • Patent number: 4977991
Abstract: A multiple disc clutch is provided for use with a source of torque. The clutch comprises interleaved first and second sets of friction discs mounted for rotation of one disc set relative to the other disc set about an axis, the disc sets being shiftable axially of each other; a flywheel plate for mounting in driving engagement to said source of torque; and a plurality of separately formed dowels for securing to said flywheel plate at circumferendowels for securing to said flywheel plate at circumferentially spaced locations, the dowels projecting axially therefrom through corresponding circumferentially spaced apertures adjacent the radially outward edge of the second disc set for driving engagement with said second disc set, the number and spacing of the dowels being chosen with respect to the circumference of the second disc set to promote air cooling of the multiple disc clutch by circulation of air around the dowels and between discs of the disc sets.

  • Patent number: 3973660
Abstract: A transmission device includes a housing having a clutch assembly therein interposed in controlling relation between an input shaft and an output shaft. The clutch assembly, preferably a wet pack, includes a plurality of driver clutch elements splined to the input shaft, and a plurality of driven clutch elements connected with the output shaft. A non-rotatable axially shiftable force applying plate is operable for shifting a pressure plate axially along the input shaft to shift the clutch assembly into and out of driving relation with respect to the output shaft. A clutch actuator assembly includes a revolvable cam connected with the force applying plate for shifting the same axially of the output shaft. Springs normally urge the clutch actuator assembly and the force applying plate in a de-clutching direction, the spring pressure being absorbed substantially entirely by the input shaft.
