Patent number: 8755533Abstract: Systems and methods may be used to modify a controllable stimulus generated by a digital audio device in communication with a human user. An input signal is provided to the digital audio device. In turn, the digital audio device sends a stimulus based on that input signal to the human user, who takes an action, usually in the form of an output signal, to characterize the stimulus that the user receives, based on the user's perception. An algorithm, lookup table, or other procedure then determines a difference between the input signal and the output signal, and a perceptual model is constructed based at least in part on the difference. Thereafter, a new value for the parameter of the digital audio device is suggested based at least in part on the perceptual model. This process continues iteratively until the user's optimal device parameters are determined.Type: GrantFiled: August 4, 2008Date of Patent: June 17, 2014Assignee: Cochlear Ltd.Inventors: Bonny Banerjee, Lee Krause

Patent number: 5674264Abstract: An implanted device such as cochlear implant having electrodes is provided with a pulse generator for generating stimulating pulses. The pulses are adjusted to insure that during the idle periods between the pulses, the voltage on the electrodes is at zero or at a preselected level. In one embodiment, the pulse durations or amplitudes adjusted, In another embodiment the voltage on the electrodes is measured before and during each pulse to determine IR drops from the electrodes to a reference point, and to compensate for the same.Type: GrantFiled: January 17, 1996Date of Patent: October 7, 1997Assignee: Cochlear Ltd.Inventors: Paul Carter, David Money

Patent number: 5667514Abstract: An inserting device is provided for inserting an elongated thin flexible surgical member, such as an electrode, and the like, into body tissues. The device includes a pair of tubular portions with longitudinal slits. The two members define a lumen for accepting the surgical member after the device is introduced into the tissues. Thereafter, the members are positioned so that the slits are aligned to provide an opening which allows the inserting device to be withdrawn without interfering with the inserted surgical instrument. An enforcing element, such as an obturator, may be inserted into the lumen while the inserting device is introduced into the tissues.Type: GrantFiled: December 4, 1995Date of Patent: September 16, 1997Assignee: Cochlear Ltd.Inventor: James Heller

Patent number: 5645585Abstract: An implantable cochlear electrode assembly includes a flexible rod-like electrode carrier and a flexible rod-like positioning member which are initially parallel to and closely alongside each other and, when the assembly is inserted endwise into the cochlea, adopt the spiral curvature of the cochlea. The electrode carrier and the positioning member are connected to each other at their respective leading end regions by a latchless rod-and-socket joint and at their respective trailing end regions by a ring-shaped member having a generally D-shaped cross-sectional configuration, with the flat wall of the "D" defining the circumferential boundary surface of the passageway in the ring member through which the electrode carrier and the positioning member jointly pass with a close fit.Type: GrantFiled: March 15, 1996Date of Patent: July 8, 1997Assignee: Cochlear Ltd.Inventor: Janusz A. Kuzma

Patent number: 5597380Abstract: An improved sound processor, with particular application to stimulation of implanted electrode arrays, such as cochlear implants. The processor channelizes received sound signals into at least ten analysis channels to produce amplitude signals for each channel. A predefined number of channels with the largest amplitude are used to modulate stimuli for the implanted array. The predefined number is at least four, and less than or equal to half the number of analysis channels.Type: GrantFiled: May 9, 1994Date of Patent: January 28, 1997Assignee: Cochlear Ltd.Inventors: Hugh J. McDermott, Andrew E. Vandali

Patent number: 5584870Abstract: A protective component is provided for protecting a cochlear implant from external electrostatic discharges. The implant receives signals through a receiver coil inductively coupled to a transmitter coil. The protective component is disposed across the coil of the transmitter.Type: GrantFiled: March 9, 1995Date of Patent: December 17, 1996Assignee: Cochlear Ltd.Inventors: Peter Single, Kenneth R. Dickson, David Money

Patent number: 5578084Abstract: An electrode array (12) for cochlear (30) implant is formed by two layers, wherein the first layer (10, 20) is formed from a bio-compatible material and contains electrode contacts and connecting leads and the second layer (11, 21) is formed from a bio-compatible material having a property of a controlled rate of expansion when exposed to the water contained in body fluids. This material expands in use and curves the implanted array and enables more effective stimulation.Type: GrantFiled: May 4, 1994Date of Patent: November 26, 1996Assignees: Cochlear Ltd., University of MelbourneInventors: Janusz Kuzma, Henry L. Seldon, Gordon G. Brown

Patent number: 5545219Abstract: An implantable cochlear electrode assembly includes an initially straight flexible rod-like electrode carrier and an initially straight flexible rod-like positioning member which extend in substantially parallel relation to and closely alongside each other. The assembly is inserted endwise into the scala tympani of the cochlea so as to adopt the spiral curvature of the cochlea, with the positioning member being disposed at that side region of the electrode carrier which faces the outer wall of the cochlea and is opposite to the side region of the electrode carrier at which the contact faces of the array of electrodes are exposed.Type: GrantFiled: March 30, 1995Date of Patent: August 13, 1996Assignee: Cochlear, Ltd.Inventor: Janusz A.
