  • Patent number: 10773634
Abstract: An array (166, 184, 194, 230, 256) of multiple light heads (170, 186, 194, 236) for a vehicle (100) has a primary Controller Area Network (CAN) serial data bus (108, 224) to carry first serial communications among spaced-apart CAN nodes (112, 118, 130, 136, 140, 154, 220, 260, 288) communicatively coupled thereto. The first serial communications initiate a flash sequence from the array via second serial communications provided to the multiple light heads communicatively coupled to a nested CAN serial data bus (180, 190, 200, 238). An array controller (130, 136, 140, 220, 260) segregates the nested CAN serial data bus from the primary CAN serial data bus while providing a communications bridge between nodes of the two buses. Accordingly, light heads on the nested bus provide self-identification and diagnostic information to other nodes such as a computer (288) configuration utility (290) featuring a graphical user interface (292).

  • Patent number: 10548187
Abstract: In connection with a ground transportation vehicle light head (86) powered by a battery-based voltage source (20) supplying positive (76) and reference (i.e., ground) (78) voltages that define a voltage difference (22) applied across a number of multiple series-connected high-power light-emitting diodes (HP LEDs) (12) and current regulator circuitry (80) electrically connected to them, ultra-low dropout circuit techniques are disclosed for increasing a portion of the voltage difference available from the battery-based voltage source to forward bias and thereby maximize the number of the multiple series-connected HP LEDs emitting light by maintaining a low voltage drop (82) across the current regulator circuitry.

  • Patent number: 9409512
Abstract: A signal lighting beacon for a vehicle has a base and a plurality of LED arrays mounted on the base. the LED arrays are arranged to direct light signals outward in multiple different radial directions. Each LED array has an LED array circuit board having plurality of LEDs and an electrical connector mounted thereon. A common circuit board is connected to each of the plurality of LED arrays by electrical connectors on the common circuit board. The electrical connectors of single-sided LED circuit boards can be substantially identical to the electrical connectors on a single-sided common circuit board disposed at an angle relative to the LED circuit boards. The connectors can be connected to one another by inserting spade terminals into corresponding sockets from the sides of the sockets. The LED arrays can be pivoted relative to the common circuit board without withdrawing the spade terminals from the sockets.

  • Patent number: 9365153
Abstract: A signal lighting system for a vehicle includes a housing having an open front end. A bottom and top of the housing each have an arcuate front edge. The bottom extends farther forward than the top so the front edge of the bottom is in front of the front edge of the top. The system includes a plurality of lights between the bottom and top and positioned for directing light generally forward. Gaskets are at the front edges of the top and bottom of the housing for conforming the lighting system to a windshield of the vehicle. The lighting system is adjustable to facilitate mounting the lighting system in a wide range of different makes and models of vehicle notwithstanding differences that may exist between their windshield geometries. The lights may be included in light modules that can be rotationally adjusted while the system is mounted on the vehicle.
