  • Publication number: 20080125759
Abstract: An implantable drug delivery system includes an infusion pump assembly with a fluid outlet, a fluid delivery pathway extending from the pump outlet to a target tissue site; and a controlled release material unit positioned in the fluid delivery pathway to release a drug or bioactive material into the delivery pathway. The pump assembly delivers fluid as a high flow infusion flow in said pathway, entraining drug material released by the release unit and establishing a pressure gradient at the distal end of the pathway that results in convection-enhanced transport such that the released drug(s) or treatment material enter the target tissue site with enhanced penetration depth and/or concentration. The pump delivers a carrier fluid that may reside in an external or in an implanted reservoir, or that may be an endogenous fluid, such as plasma or CSF.

  • Patent number: 7367968
Abstract: A valve that is adapted to control the flow rate of fluid flow from an implantable pump or other fluid delivery device is provided. In general, the valve includes a multi-lumen member that is adapted to receive fluid-flow therethrough, and a restrictor member that is coupled to the multi-lumen member such that the restrictor member is effective to selectively restrict at least a portion of one or more lumens in the multi-lumen member to thereby adjust the flow rate of fluid flowing through the multi-lumen member. The valve can be built into an implantable drug pump to control fluid flow exiting the pump, or alternatively the valve can disposed within a catheter or otherwise coupled to an outlet port in an implantable drug pump to control the flow rate of fluid exiting the drug pump.

  • Patent number: 7334594
Abstract: A shunt valve assembly includes an electromechanical brake mechanism that locks a position of a pressure setting mechanism within a shunt valve assembly. The electromechanical brake can maintain the position of the pressure setting mechanism in the presence of a relatively strong magnetic field to maintain a set pressure differential within the shunt valve assembly. In certain cases, the shunt valve requires repositioning of the pressure setting mechanism within the shunt valve assembly to adjust a fluid flow rate through the shunt valve assembly. A clinician can activate an external controller to transmit a signal to the shunt valve assembly through magnetically coupled antennas between the controller and the shunt valve. The shunt valve assembly utilizes the signal to activate the braking mechanism and unlock the pressure setting mechanism. The clinician then operates the controller to non-invasively reposition the pressure setting mechanism and adjust the pressure at which the shunt valve opens.

  • Patent number: 7331940
Abstract: A percutaneous access device is provided including a sleeve having an inner lumen extending therethrough that is adapted to slidably receive a catheter, and at least one flange disposed around the sleeve and adapted to be positioned adjacent a tissue surface. In a preferred embodiment, the device includes a first flange disposed around the sleeve and adapted to be positioned adjacent a first tissue surface, and a second flange disposed around the sleeve and spaced apart from the first flange such that the second flange is adapted to be disposed adjacent a second tissue surface opposed to the first tissue surface. In use, the flanges 16, 18 are positioned on opposed sides of tissue so that the device 10 is effective to prevent tissue surrounding the percutaneous access device from coming into contact with the catheter as it is introduced through the sleeve 12.

  • Publication number: 20070239381
Abstract: Methods and devices are described for monitoring reservoir fluid in an implantable infusion pump. Such methods and devices can be used when the infusion pump has a temperature-dependent component. For example, a method of monitoring reservoir fluid can include obtaining measurements from the reservoir that include corresponding data related to the amount of fluid and temperature in the reservoir. A pair of measurements can be used to monitor the fluid level, or flow rate out of, the reservoir when the corresponding temperatures of the measurements are within a temperature tolerance value. In such an instance, a measured amount difference can be calculated based on the fluid amounts corresponding to the pair of measurements. Other variations of fluid monitoring methods, and implantable infusion pump systems that can perform fluid monitoring, are also described.

  • Patent number: 7226430
Abstract: A closed loop feedback drug delivery system for controlling muscle activity, e.g., spasticity. The system includes a sensor, e.g., an EMG sensor, for monitoring muscle activity and generating a detected muscle activity signal. A controller automatically adjusts at least one of timing and dosage of a drug administered to control muscle activity based on the detected muscle activity signal and produces a control signal. Administering of the drug, e.g., an antispasmodic drug, for controlling muscle activity based on the control signal is performed by an infusion pump. The drug after being emitted from the pump is then delivered to the spinal cord of the patient using an intrathecal catheter.

  • Patent number: 7226441
Abstract: A catheter is provided having a plurality of fluid entry ports formed therein and in communication with an inner lumen of the catheter. One or more of the fluid entry ports includes a fluid-permeable barrier extending there across.
