Abstract: An upper receiver for a firearm, the upper receiver having: a hand guard section removably connected to the upper receiver via a locking mechanism pivotally mounted to the hand guard section for movement between a locking position and an unlocking position, wherein the locking mechanism requires only a single movement in one direction to move from the locking position to the unlocking position, wherein the hand guard section has peripheral device mounting rails located at a six o'clock position with respect to a centerline of the barrel and wherein the hand guard section is capable of being completely detached and removed from the upper receiver after the locking mechanism has been moved into the unlocking position; and a plurality of integrally formed rails located above the hand guard section and at three, nine and twelve o'clock positions with respect to the centerline of the barrel.

A barrel has a bore, the barrel coupled to the receiver. An indirect gas operating system has a cylinder and a piston, the indirect gas operating system mounted with a mounting structure substantially independent of the barrel. The cylinder is in communication with the bore, and the piston is fitted to the cylinder and disposed for striking the striking surface and displacing the bolt assembly.

Abstract: A semi-automatic or automatic rifle is provided. The rifle having: an upper hand guard and a lower hand guard each removably secured to an upper receiver of the rifle, wherein the upper hand guard has an integral upper rail that extends along an upper surface of the upper hand guard and the upper hand guard has a rear tab that is received within a mating slot of the upper receiver when the upper hand guard is secured to the upper receiver and wherein the upper rail of the upper hand guard is contiguous with a receiver rail when the upper hand guard is secured to the upper receiver; a cap configured to releasably engage a forward end of the upper hand guard and a forward end of the lower hand guard; and wherein the upper hand guard and the lower hand guard are not directly secured to a barrel of the rifle such that the upper hand guard and the lower hand guard float in position relative to the barrel of the rifle.

Abstract: A firearm having a lower receiver is provided. The receiver is adapted to couple with a plurality of upper receivers having different calibers. The lower receiver comprises a receiver extension having an opening therein. A spring is disposed within the opening. A buffer member is provided having a first portion having an end. The buffer member is coupled to the spring within the opening, wherein the buffer member is movable between a first position where the end is within the opening and a second position wherein the end external to the opening.

Abstract: A front sight for a weapon, the front sight having: a mounting block; a tower pivotally mounted to the mounting block for movement between a first position and a second position; a first locking mechanism comprising a plurality of spring biased members for retaining the tower in the first position and the second position, the plurality of spring biased members being configured to allow movement of the tower between the first position and the second position in response to a force applied to the tower; and a second locking mechanism configured to lock the tower in the second position, wherein the second locking mechanism must be manually released before the tower can be moved from the second position to the first position.

Abstract: An automatic or semi-automatic firearm having an indirect gas operating system, the firearm having: a receiver; a bolt assembly slidably received within the receiver; a barrel having a bore, the barrel coupled to the receiver; a gas block mounted to the barrel, the gas block having a cylinder in fluid communication with the bore; a rod coupled to the cylinder and having a striking rod; wherein gas discharged from a fired cartridge displaces the rod and causes the striking rod to strike a striking surface of the bolt assembly, wherein the gas repositions the bolt assembly in bore.

Abstract: A system for removably securing a hand guard to a semi-automatic or automatic rifle is provided. The system having: a first locking assembly for removably coupling a rear end of the hand guard to an upper receiver of the rifle; a second locking assembly for removably coupling a forward end of the hand guard to the rifle; and wherein the first locking assembly and the second locking assembly axially and rotationally position the hand guard with respect to the rifle and wherein the hand guard is not directly secured to a barrel of the rifle.

Abstract: An automatic or semi-automatic firearm including a trigger having a frame, at least one trigger sear extending from the frame, and a hammer having a hammer pivot axis, a head and at least one hammer sear disposed on a lateral side of the hammer between the hammer pivot axis and the head, wherein the frame includes a pivot axis and the at least one trigger sear includes a trigger sear surface, the at least one trigger sear extending from the frame such that the at least one trigger sear engages a corresponding one of the at least one hammer sear.

Abstract: A fire control selector for an automatic firearm capable of automatic or semiautomatic fire is provided. The firearm has a receiver having a moveable hammer. The selector is rotatably mounted in the receiver. A first sear is rotatably mounted in the receiver to engage the hammer where the first sear contacts a first camming surface of the selector. A second sear is rotatably mounted in the receiver to engage the hammer where the second sear contacts a second camming surface of the selector. A disconnect is rotatably mounted in the receiver where the disconnect contacts a third camming surface of the selector. The selector has a number of selectable positions.

Abstract: An indirect gas operating system for a semi-automatic or automatic rifle is provided, the indirect gas operating system having: a gas block secured to the rifle; a barrel secured to the rifle; a bolt carrier slidably received within a receiver of the rifle; a means for moving the bolt carrier within the receiver using gases discharged into a bore of the barrel of the rifle, wherein the means for moving is removably secured to the gas block such that the means for moving can be removed from the rifle through a forward end of the gas block without removing the gas block from the rifle; and an externally threaded barrel nut for securing the barrel to the receiver.

Abstract: A method of making a hand guard for a semi-automatic or automatic rifle is provided. The method including the steps of: forming a first portion of the hand guard from a first material; inserting the formed first portion into a mold; and molding a second portion of the hand guard about the first portion, the second portion being a second material, the second material being different from the first material, wherein a first section of the first portion is completely encased by the second portion and a second section of the first portion is not encased by the second portion.

Abstract: A model 1911 semiautomatic pistol thumb safety or decocking lever adapted to be coupled to a model 1911 receiver. The thumb safety has a selector pivotally coupled about an axis of rotation to a side of the model 1911 receiver the selector having a flat surface portion offset from the axis of rotation and contacting the side. The selector has a raised surface portion offset from the axis of rotation and facing the side. The safety is adapted to be selectable from a first position to a second position. The flat surface portion covers a swept area when the safety is rotated from the first position to the second position. The swept area is covered by the raised surface portion in either the first position or the second position.
