Patent number: 6301815Abstract: A gun and a base unit such that the gun cannot be fired unless the gun comes in close contact with the base unit and the base unit determines that an authorized person is holding the gun and interfacing with the base unit. The base unit pre-records and stores characteristics of authorized persons and unauthorized person and compares these data with the person interfacing with the base unit. The gun must be gripped to be activated by the base unit and if it is put down, the gun is no longer capable of being fired. The base unit can use multiple means of identifying an individual and a process is described for combining the results from the multiple sources to determine if a person is an authorized person above a selectable threshold of probability. The base unit can also develop a probability that the person attempting to use the gun is a specified unauthorized person. Thresholds of being an authorized person or not being an unauthorized person can be adjusted.Type: GrantFiled: March 4, 1999Date of Patent: October 16, 2001Assignee: Colt's Manufacturing Company, Inc.Inventor: Steven M. Patent number: 5927578Abstract: The invention relates to a lock system for firearms whereby an inexpensive, reliable and easy to use locking system is provided as part of a firearm and involves the formation of an opening formed in a strategically located part of the trigger assembly. The opening is appropriately sized and shaped to receive a conventional standard lock having a movable shank which is open and placed through the strategically placed opening in the trigger assembly and thereafter locked in place to affect the inoperative condition of the firearm. The lock can also be mounted as part of a holster which prevents inadvertent firing and removal of the firearm.Type: GrantFiled: May 28, 1998Date of Patent: July 27, 1999Assignee: Colt's Manufacturing Company, Inc.Inventor: Ira M. Patent number: 5827992Abstract: A known gas operated firearm has been modified to be of more compact size and reduced weight while retaining the firepower, the features, and most of the components of its predecessor. A bolt assembly reciprocably mounted in a longitudinal cavity of a receiver assembly for movement between recoil and battery positions has a forwardly facing pressure surface and first and second longitudinally extending coaxial bores. The annular flange of a firing pin is slidable in the second bore and the bolt assembly includes a transversely extending retaining pin engageable by the annular flange to define an aftward terminal position of the firing pin. A recoil assembly includes a pair of tungsten weights mounted in the longitudinal cavity for rectilinear movement with the bolt assembly between the recoil and battery positions and includes means to bias the bolt assembly toward the battery position.Type: GrantFiled: October 24, 1997Date of Patent: October 27, 1998Assignee: Colt's Manufacturing Company, Inc.Inventors: Michael R. Patent number: 5483766Abstract: A combined handgrip and trigger guard for a firearm has a handgrip section and a trigger guard section. Preferably, the handgrip section and trigger guard section are provided as an integral one-piece polymer member. The trigger guard section extends from the handgrip section in a general cantilevered configuration. A free end of the cantilever trigger guard section has an integral pin section that is located in a hole of a frame of the firearm. Locating the free end of the trigger guard section against the frame with the pin section in the hole of the frame is the only direct connection of the trigger guard section to the frame and does not use additional fasteners directly between the trigger guard section and the frame.Type: GrantFiled: November 2, 1994Date of Patent: January 16, 1996Assignee: Colt's Manufacturing Company Inc.Inventors: Paul M.
