Abstract: A long-stroke sootblower is mounted to extend over a fulcrum at the entrance to the furnace space. The track traversed by the end of the outer casing of the blower is sloped upward to the fulcrum in control of the vertical position of the nozzle-bearing end of the blower extended into the furnace space. Drain points on the blower remove condensate formed from the residual steam and that which may leak through the valve admitting steam to the feed tube of the blower structure.
Abstract: In a spray dryer apparatus (20) wherein a slurry (30) is contacted with a hot drying gas (12), a spray head assembly comprising an annular swirler vane assembly (42) disposed about the gas inlet in the roof of the spray dryer (20), an atomizing spray head housing (44) disposed coaxially within the center of the swirler vane assembly, an elongated guide tube (46) extending upwardly from the spray head housing (44), an atomizing spray head (58) disposed in the spray head housing with its spray tip (60) extending into the spray dryer (20), an elongated seal sleeve (72) extending downwardly from the guide tube into the spray head housing, and a support tube (70) extending upwardly from the spray head (58) into the seal sleeve (72). The support tube (70) is slidably translatable with the seal sleeve (70) and the guide tube (46) so that the spray head (58) attached to the support tube may be withdrawn upwardly through the guide tube for removal for inspection and maintenance.
Abstract: Fuel and a first portion of combustion air are introduced into the furnace (10) of a fossil fuel-fired steam generator in a first zone (30) remote from the gas outlet (14) of the furnace. A second portion of the combustion air, termed overfire air, is introduced into the furnace in a second zone (60) spaced from the first zone (30) intermediate the first zone and the gas outlet of the furnace. The outlet temperature of the superheat steam conveyed through the superheater surface (24) is regulated by selectively directing the overfire air introduced into the furnace towards the gas outlet of the furnace to increase the superheat steam outlet temperature and selectively directing the overfire air introduced into the furnace away from the gas outlet of the furnace to decrease the steam superheat outlet temperature.
Abstract: An electronic system particularly suited for effecting control over the pressure of the hydraulic fluid through which the journal loading is established on the grinding rolls (20) of a bowl mill (10) of the type that is employed to pulverize coal. The subject electronic system is operatively connected in circuit relation to the belt feeder means (12), located externally of the bowl mill (10), that supplies to the bowl mill (10) the coal that is to be pulverized therein. In addition, the subject electronic system is also operatively connected in circuit relation to the hydraulic power unit (22) of the bowl mill (10) that provides hydraulic fluid under pressure to the grinding rolls (20).
Abstract: An anchor assembly for supporting an insulation panel or blanket on furnace walls which includes an extension member adapted to be fastened to an existing anchor member in order to extend the length of the anchor assembly to accommodate insulation of greater thickness. The extension member has attaching means which engage notches in the existing anchor to hold to extension in position. Different species of the attaching means are disclosed.
Abstract: A leak detection system 40 particularly suited for employment in a steam generator 10 of the type that embodies at least one tube sheet 34 or 36 to which ends of a multiplicity of elongated tubular members 32 are suitably secured. The subject leak detection system 40 is operative both for purposes of detecting the occurrence of leaks in the steam generator 10 as well as for purposes of enabling a determination to be made as to the probable location of the leaks and the direction of flow of the leaking fluid.
Abstract: A tool for manipulating an ultrasonic inspection transducer is actuated to move the transducer over the surface of an irregular weld body. The weld body disclosed, joins the nozzle of a reactor vessel to its vessel, the irregularity of the weld body defined by the intersection of the two cylinders. The transducer is moved over the surface of the weld body and actuated to scan through a predetermined angle in relation to the changing aspect of the geometry of the weld body by a cam mounted at the pivoting center of the tool.

Abstract: A filter apparatus (2) is disclosed for filtering out any reoccurring noise (5) present in a defect signal (1) received from a flaw detection device (4) such as an eddy current test probe. Filter circuit means (10) receives the defect signal generated by the flaw detector device and produces an output signal (5) duplicative of any reoccurring noise present therein. A differential amplifier (50) subtracts the output signal (5) of the filter circuit means from the defect signal (1) generated by the flaw detection device and amplifies the difference. A filtered defect signal (9) void of any reoccurring noise is thereby produced.

Each burner is provided with its own individual scanner. Each scanner (20) is disposed to sight transversely across the base (30) of the flame (18) emanating from its associated burner (14). A plurality of at least three light transmission tubes (26) are stationarily mounted within each scanner head (24) with at least one tube (26A) mounted to sight at an upward acute angle across the flame, at least one other tube (26B) mounted to sight horizontally across the flame, and at least a third tube (26C) mounted to sight at a downward acute angle across the flame. A separate fire ball scanner (60) is mounted in the waterwall and aimed to sight at the center of the furnace (10) to monitor the fire ball (50) formed therein by the flames (18) emanating from the individual burners (14).
Abstract: A drilling riser between a subsea wellhead and a floating platform has a slip joint in its upper end. A chamber is formed within the slip joint and supplied fluid pressure to develop a tensioning force on the upper end of the riser as the floating platform cycles vertically under the influence of heave and tidal forces.
Abstract: In the process of scrubbing flue gas to remove pollutants therefrom by contacting the flue gas with an aqueous reactant mixture of water and pollutant absorbent, water soluble chloride impurities present in the flue gas and make-up water tend to build-up as the supernatent liquor from the spent reactant mixture dewatering cycle is recycled for mixing with unreacted pollutant absorbent to form additional reactant mixture for contacting with the pollutant laden gas. The build-up of chlorides in the reactant mixture is controlled by passing a purge stream of the chloride containing liquor in contact with a hot drying gas so as to evaporate the water and crystallize the chloride impurities in the purge stream. The crystallized particles of chloride salt are then removed from the drying gas as a dry solid.
