  • Patent number: 6882318
Abstract: A mono-band planar inverted F antenna (PIFA) structure comprises a planar radiating element having a first area, and a ground plane having a second area that is substantially parallel to the radiating element first area. An electrically conductive first line is coupled to the radiating element at a first contact located at an edge on a side of the radiating element. The first line is also coupled to the ground plane. An electrically conductive second line is coupled to the radiating element at second and third contacts located along the same side as the first line, but at different locations on the edge than the first contact. Useable bandwidth of the PIFA is increased by using multiple contact locations to couple the conductive second line to the radiating element. The first and second lines are adapted to couple to a desired impedance, e.g., 50 ohms, at frequencies of operation of the PIFA.

  • Patent number: 6847351
Abstract: Systems and methods of pointing in hand-held devices are described. In accordance with this scheme, a user may control the position where a pointer is displayed on a display screen simply by changing the orientation of the hand-held device relative to a currently preferred device orientation, which is tracked automatically. In addition, unintentional device orientation changes, such as periodic device orientation changes that might be caused by carrying the hand-held device while walking or driving, are filtered out dynamically. In this way, the pointer may be positioned accurately and reliably at any one of a plurality of pointer screen locations based upon changes in device orientation under a wide variety of different usage conditions.

  • Publication number: 20040226836
Abstract: A holder for a mobile communication device comprises a receptacle for optimally reducing the SAR value of a mobile communication device secured within the receptacle. At least one material portion, a patch, causing electromagnetic losses may be placed within the receptacle to optimally reduce exposure to low level radio frequency energy to an individual carrying a mobile telephone secured within the receptacle. The patch formed of electromagnetic field reducing material may be placed in one or more particular areas of the receptacle to attenuate one or more corresponding regions of the mobile telephone in which the SAR value is substantially at a local maximum. This may allow a reduction of the SAR value of a mobile telephone while limiting the performance loss associated with the reduction of the SAR value of the mobile telephone when the mobile telephone is secured within the receptacle.

  • Patent number: 6751775
Abstract: A method of determining a trellis from a sequence of n symbols in a Viterbi detector. The method includes the steps of receiving a sequence of n symbols, defining partitioned sets according to a decision tree structure, and determining size of each set partitioning according to tap energy of the channel. The method also includes steps of determining a reduced set of connection paths between the current layer and a destination layer in the trellis by determining a value of a most likely oldest partitioned set in a current layer; and calculating branch metrics only for the current layers in the trellis in which the oldest partitioned set matches the determined value.

  • Patent number: 6744750
Abstract: Systems and methods allow for more efficient wireless networking. In one system, plural subscriber units form a direct network and transmit and receive without base station mediation. In another system, base stations are networked so that one base station can take advantage of the second, networked, base station. In one example, high-capacity lines are connected to one base station which is then networked to a second base station. Through the network, the second base station can utilize the high-capacity lines without being directly connected to them. In another example, the subscriber units can migrate between all base stations in the network. In another example, using networked base stations and unassigned time sequences or codes, calls can be dynamically reassigned between base stations to meet shifting demand.

  • Patent number: 6745043
Abstract: A priority communication system (12) is provided. The priority communication system (12) comprises a plurality of communication devices (16) and a switching system (18) for communicating with the plurality of communication devices (16) over a limited number of communication channels (20). The switching system (18) operates to assign a received communication signal (24) to an open communication channel (20) based on a priority rating of the received communication signal (24). The switching system (18) may also operate to terminate a communication link having a priority rating lower than the priority rating of the received communication signal (24) in order to open a communication channel (20) and establish a communication link for the received communication signal (24).

  • Patent number: 6738620
Abstract: A cordless digital telephone system which allows broadcast over broadcast is provided. Time division multiple access (TDMA) cordless phone systems provide a base unit which is able to provide connections for a plurality of mobile units, such as handsets. With time division, the mobile units are synchronized to different time slots. A broadcast mode is provided that causes the mobile units to be placed in a receive only mode and to synchronize to the same time slot where a broadcast message is sent. In this way, a cordless telephone base unit in a broadcast mode receives a radio or streaming audio signal. A call controller unit included in or coupled to the base station then sends the received radio or streaming audio signal to at least one mobile unit in communication with the base station.

  • Publication number: 20040087277
Abstract: A system, method, apparatus, means, and computer program code for improving accuracy of radio timing measurements. According to embodiments of the present invention, a terminal may obtain a measurement of each of a plurality of radio transmission sources at a distinct instance in time. In addition, a radio timing measurement for a common radio source is obtained for each of the distinct instants in time. The result will be a pair of radio timing measurements for each distinct instance in time containing smaller adjustment errors than radio timing measurements for all radio sources obtained for one common instant in time. The pairs of radio timing measurements can be used to more accurately support applications in which the geographic position of the terminal is obtained.

  • Patent number: 6690771
Abstract: A system and method for call screening in a wireless telephone system. When a call is received on an answering machine (17) associated with a base part (11), the user at a portable part (12) may select a call screen button (19). The resulting signal is received at the base part (11), which then enters a broadcast mode. The incoming answering machine message is broadcast to all handsets (12, 14, 16). In a TDMA system, an audio message is broadcast from a base part (11) during a single time slot of a time division. The user at a particular portable part may then select a pick up button to pick up the call.
