  • Patent number: 5905776
Abstract: A system and method of providing site-to-site compatibility of telecommunications stations allow users to transparently relocate among a number of different stations, while the apparent locations of the users remain fixed. Co-ordinator modules of a private branch exchange (PBX) establish peer-to-peer communications with station-based co-ordinator modules to provide automated routing to the station at which the particular individual is located, while leaving the apparent location of the user fixed at a designated station of the PBX. In one embodiment, the compatibility of stations allows the user to operate from a home-based station, while the apparent location of the user to any calling and called parties is an office-based station that is dedicated to the user. In a second embodiment, the compatibility allows the user to operate from any one of a variety of office stations, while the apparent location remains fixed at one of the office stations.

  • Patent number: 5898668
Abstract: A method and system for managing the routing of communications data, such as real-time multimedia exchanges between remote sites, includes monitoring various communications modes, with each mode having pre-established quality of service parameter values and a pre-established session tariff. Some of the modes provide variable quality of service. The variable modes are monitored continuously to determine present-time quality of service parameter values. When a request to establish a communication session is received, the request will specify quality of service requirements. An acceptable session tariff is calculated based upon the match of the specified requirements with the pre-established parameter values of the modes. In a preferred embodiment, the next step is to select that mode having the highest quality of service available for a session tariff that does not exceed the predefined acceptable session tariff.

  • Patent number: 5898768
Abstract: A method and apparatus for processing a sequence of calls directed to different destination sites from a single calling site via a provider having a connection-based tariff structure that employs first and second levels of connections in order to increase cost efficiency. The first level connection is from the provider to an intermediate site, such as a server, with the first level connection being maintained throughout the sequence of calls. The second level connection is formed from the intermediate site to the destination sites in the sequential order determined by the calling party. Each call to a destination site includes a different second level connection that is terminated from a completion of the call, without affecting the first level connection. The call information relating to the different calls in the sequence is transmitted from the calling site to the intermediate site by techniques such as the transmission of DTMF signals or conventional digital call setup signals.

  • Patent number: 5898673
Abstract: A data traffic network 200 in which excess cells, or cells whose transfer is expected to cause the user to exceed the QoS traffic contract bandwidth limit, are transferred to a destination node 300b via an alternate or secondary network 212. More particularly, traffic received at a first ATM node 300a (for example, an end user node) is or has been classified according to traffic type, such as voice, data, or video (with their corresponding characteristics). Prior to packetizing the data streams into the ATM fixed length packets, the ATM node 300a, 600a determines whether the QoS traffic contract bandwidth limit has been exceeded or is likely to be exceeded. If so, then the corresponding traffic is transmitted to the destination node 300b via an appropriate alternate network 212. For example, voice traffic is transferred to a PBX and, ultimately, to the public switched telephone network (PSTN).

  • Patent number: 5896374
Abstract: A variable rate transmission method that can vary the transmission rate of data. A transmitting side supplies a transmitted data sequence to an error detecting encoder 105 and a frame memory 103. The frame memory 103 stores data of a variable length to be transmitted in one frame. The error detecting encoder 105 calculates an error detecting code (such as CRC code) for each frame of the transmitted data. A multiplexer 104 adds the calculated error detecting code ahead of the transmitted data to place it at the initial position of the frame, and sequentially outputs the data sequence frame by frame. A receiving side calculates an error detecting code of the data in each transmitted frame in the same manner as the transmitting side, and compares the calculated error detecting code with the error detecting code at the initial position of the frame. The end bit of the frame data is decided as a position at which the two error detecting codes coincide.

  • Patent number: 5892819
Abstract: A method and system of managing call forwarding includes establishing criteria for selecting among possible links between nodes for forwarding calls from an originating node to a destination node. In the preferred embodiment, the selection of the possible links is made at a called node from which the call is to be forwarded. Based upon the administrable criteria, there is a determination as to whether an intermediate node along the call path between the originating node and the called node is to be selected for initiating the forwarding path. If an intermediate node is selected, a request is transmitted to the intermediate node to initiate the forwarding path to the destination node. On the other hand, if no intermediate node is selected, a determination is made as to whether to initiate the forwarding path from the originating node or from the called node. Again, the determination is made according to the administrable criteria.

  • Patent number: 5886652
Abstract: For the transmission of variable length coded data blocks, a threshold arithmetic calculation circuit (9) obtains a threshold from an average of the bit lengths of the variable length coded data blocks for each group of such block, and the judgment circuit (10) makes a judgment as to whether or not those variable length coded data blocks have bit lengths exceeding the threshold of the block group to which such data blocks belong. Then, a block divider circuit 11 divides the variable length coded data blocks having bit lengths exceeding the threshold into blocks having small bit lengths. Each block thus obtained is fixedly equalized in bit length to an average length level and transmitted in that condition.

  • Patent number: 5884165
Abstract: In a mobile communication system, a data communication fixed station 3 and a voice communication fixed station 4 control a common service area, the connection between a mobile station 5 and the data communication fixed station 3 can be quickened. The data communication fixed station 3 notifies, sequentially, the voice communication fixed station 4 of channel informations (e.g., usable channels, traffic quantity). The voice communication fixed station 4 receives the channel information via a broadcast channel for voice communication, and broadcasts the channel information to the mobile stations. When the mobile station 5 is to execute packet communication with an ISDN 1 via the data communication fixed station 3, the mobile station 5 selects an appropriate channel among the channels broadcasted thereto, and notifies the data communication fixed station 3 of the selected channel.

  • Patent number: 5883950
Abstract: A method for enabling a plurality of Local Service Providers within a common Numbering Plan Area (NPA) to serve Subscribers of the plurality of Local Service Providers. The method includes the step of assigning to each Subscriber of a Local Service Provider within the common NPA a unique three digit code, hereinafter referred to as a SPA code. The service provider area (SPA) code is used by the telephone system in the same manner presently used for routing calls made when a calling Subscriber dials the NPA code of the called party. Here, however, the SPA code is not dialed by the calling Subscriber. The dialed directory number, NXX-XXXX, of a called Subscriber subscribed to a different Local Service Provider, is sent to a database. The database maintains a record of the relationships between the directory numbers of Subscribers and the SPA codes of the Subscribers. The database retrieves the SPA code associated with the dialed directory number presently serving the called Subscriber.

  • Patent number: 5877660
Abstract: Input is applied to a two-partition circuit that substantially equally distributes input power into two partitions having a phase difference of 90.degree., and the thus-distributed output is applied to a first driver that generates circularly polarized wave. The two outputs of the second driver, in which the circularly polarized waves generated from the first driver are coupled, are combined in a combining circuit. The end portion of the opening of the sealed case incorporating the first driver fits together with the end portion of the opening of the sealed case incorporating the second driver such that the two sealed cases together with the first and second drivers may rotate relative to each other around their cylindrical axis. The phase difference between the input of the two-partition circuit and the output of the combining circuit changes according to the relative angle of rotation around the cylindrical axis between first and second drivers.
