    Abstract: Thin, continuous steel wires are produced by solidification of a jet of liquid steel projected into a cooling fluid. The solidication is initiated and accelerated by the presence of oxygen in the cooling fluid and by selection of the relative amounts of silicon and manganese in the liquid steel so as to provide solid silica as the oxidation product which is principally formed.
