  • Patent number: 7252143
Abstract: A free point tool has at least one sensor to measure deformation of a stuck conduit in a borehole. A set of anchors is located adjacent to and on each side of the sensor. The anchors include anchor arms that move from a stowed position to an extended position. Each of the anchor arms has a pad, which pad has a contact face. The contact face is structured and arranged to engage the conduit. The pad is coupled to the respective anchor arm in an articulating manner, such as by a pin joint or a ball and socket joint. The pad can be easily coupled to or disconnected from the arm. This allows the pad to be selected for the downhole conditions, including conduit physical characteristics and environmental conditions downhole. The anchors also include cam arms coupled between the anchor arms and an actuator. There are provided at least two sets of anchor linkages of cam arms and anchor arms so as to adapt to the conduit inside diameter.

  • Patent number: 6815954
Abstract: Using micro-resistivity techniques, an image of the wall of a borehole can be obtained. A downhole tool stack is provided with plural imaging tools, wherein each imaging tool has a set of pads that deploy radially outward to contact the borehole wall to obtain the image thereof. As the pads deploy outwardly, gaps are formed between the pads. The pads of one tool are circumferentially offset relative to the pads of the other tool so that more complete circumferential coverage of the borehole wall is obtained during the imaging process. Furthermore, an adaptive polling technique is utilized to telemeter the large amounts of data generated by the two imaging tools to the surface. Data is obtained from the imaging tools by polling at a particular rate, which rate is modified depending upon the amount of data generated by the imaging tools.

  • Patent number: 6702010
Abstract: In an apparatus and method for actuating arms used on a borehole data-logging tool to deploy measuring instruments against a borehole wall, a mandrel is provided. At least one arm carried by the mandrel is mounted to the mandrel to move between an expanded position, in which a part of the arm projects from the mandrel, and a retracted position. A resilient biassing compression spring provides a resilient biassing force on each arm for biassing the arm towards its expanded position. A hydraulic piston and cylinder assembly associated with each arm restrains the arm against movement towards its expanded position. A drive piston and cylinder assembly acts upon the resilient biassing compression springs for adjusting the resilient biassing force acting upon each arm.

  • Patent number: 6653839
Abstract: In an electrical measurement apparatus and method for measuring an electrical characteristic of an earth formation, such as in a hole drilled for the exploration for hydrocarbons, a detection portion has an operational amplifier operating in voltage follower mode, with a measurement resistor in the feedback loop. The detection portion will typically include a plurality of sensor elements, and the operational amplifier can be switched between the sensor elements. The apparatus also includes a measurement portion adapted to measure the current flow through the measurement resistor, the calculation portion including an integrator.

  • Patent number: 6376838
Abstract: A method of measuring characteristics of a geologic formation, using the time, energy and spatial spectra of gamma rays induced by an accelerator, which allows (i) the measurement of the photoelectric absorption (Pe) factor of the formation using a gamma-ray spectrum detected from gamma rays induced in the formation, (ii) the calculation of a neutron porosity of the formation using the gamma-ray spectrum, and (iii) the determination of a bulk density of the formation using the spectroscopic measurements. The Pe factor may be inferred by directly mapping the spectroscopic measurements. The porosity may be calculated by relating the gamma-ray spectrum to a hydrogen content of the formation. The density may be determined by computing a gamma diffusion length of the formation based on the gamma-ray spectrum. In addition to these measurements, the resistivity of the formation and its spontaneous potential may also be measured using an electromagnetic induction system.

  • Patent number: 6377050
Abstract: A borehole tool for logging resistivity of geologic formations, having at least two inner transmitters surrounded by at least two outer receivers. Each transmitter is sequentially excited, and measurements are taken at each of the receivers. The phase differences between these received signals are determined, once for each transmitter, and the two values are averaged to estimate the resistivity value of the surrounding formations. More than two receivers can be used. An azimuthal receiver array is also used to identify boundary transitions.

  • Patent number: 5631413
Abstract: A production logging tool is provided for use within a well to directly measure a velocity profile of a multiphase fluid flow within a cross-section of a well. The production logging tool includes a tool housing from which a plurality of arms are radially extensible. The plurality of arms are rotatably mounted to the tool housing for rotating around a tool axis extending longitudinally through the tool housing. At least one Doppler flow sensor is fixedly mounted to one of the plurality of arms for moving with the arm to dispose the Doppler flow sensor within different localized regions within a cross-section of the well. The localized regions of the cross-section are located at different radial distances from and at different angular displacements around the tool axis of the tool housing, at points distal from the tool axis.
