  • Patent number: 6147767
Abstract: A printer has a computer system which stores and uses multiple application programs. The printer may be a label printer which includes a printing mechanism, and a computer for controlling the printer mechanism and the advancement of label stock for the printer mechanism to print labels on the label stock. Coupled to the printer may be a barcode scanner controllable by the computer. The system includes a memory accessible by the computer which stores a plurality of application programs. Each of the application programs contains instructions which are executable by the computer to operate the printer. An application program can be selected by a user, or a host computer interfaced to the printer, or automatically by the printer, for execution by the computer. Utility files are also stored in the memory separate from the application programs which may include data and programs utilized by the selected application program.

  • Patent number: 6010257
Abstract: An intelligent, portable printer is provided having a controller and a printing mechanism. The controller includes a microprocessor which communicates with a terminal, which may be remote from the printer and may include or be a host computer, via cable, radio, or optical interfaces. The terminal supplies application programs and data representing commands and information to be printed. In one embodiment, the controller of the printer can operate the printer mechanism in accordance with received data when the data is preceded by a command addressing the product-type predefined for the printer. In another embodiment, the controller operates responsive to a wake-up signal from the terminal for automatically turning on the printer from a low powered state.

  • Patent number: 5997193
Abstract: An intelligent, portable printer having a microprocessor controller, a printing mechanism, and a web feed mechanism integrated into an assembly which, together with a battery pack, may weigh about 1.5 pounds and be about 60 cubic inches in volume. The web may have removable labels adhesively attached to a liner, or it may be linerless label stock with exposed adhesive, or it may be non-adhesive plain paper stock. The web may be printed with bar codes, graphics, text, or lines. Because the printer is so small and light in weight, it may be used at any site where labels are required. By labels is meant any tickets, stickers, or other patches (so-called "label-stock"). The controller includes a microprocessor which communicates interactively with a terminal, which may be remote from the printer and may include or be a host computer, via cable, radio, or optical interfaces. The terminal supplies application programs and data representing the information to be printed.

  • Patent number: 5976720
Abstract: A battery pack having an electrical circuit including a battery array of one or more batteries, a thermostat switch, and a positive temperature coefficient resistor (PTCR). Preferably, the thermostat and PTCR are disposed in a trianguloid channel formed by the nip of adjacent cylindrical batteries in a multiple battery pack so that the finished pack may have the same size and shape as a non-protected pack for the same application. Preferably, the batteries are rechargeable and the pack includes a charging plug connected across the battery array in series with the thermostat and PTCR. Preferably, the pack is wrapped in a film of a heat-shrinkable polymer to provide physical integrity.

  • Patent number: 5860753
Abstract: An improved mechanism for centering a roll of paper stock for printing in a portable printer is provided, in which the printer has a housing with a cavity and an opening from a side thereof to provide a receptacle for the roll. The centering mechanism includes a spindle disposed in the cavity toward the opening and mounted in the housing for rotation about an axis, and a pair of arms coupled to each other to move in opposite directions with respect to a center between the arms. The arms engage the two opposing ends of the roll when received on the spindle for centering the roll on the spindle. The arms are coupled to each other by a rack and pinion assembly which moves the arms in opposite direction to each other responsive to a force applied by an operator to one of the arms when a roll is received on the spindle.

  • Patent number: 5848848
Abstract: A self-contained, high power, solid state, battery voltage switching system applies battery voltage to a thermal printhead when the printer is turned on and disconnects voltage from the battery to the thermal printhead when the printer is turned off, thereby conserving battery power and increasing battery life. FET switches connect the battery to the printhead and to a circuit for applying operating voltage to a drive and control circuit for the printhead. Gate voltage is applied to the FET, or FETs when a plurality thereof are connected in parallel, to enable the FETs to provide the connection between the battery and the printhead. The gate voltage is supplied from a flip-flop and a FET driver which are self-contained with the FETs and the other circuitry in the printer.

  • Patent number: 5642666
Abstract: A hand-held label printer has an integrated label applicator mechanism pivotably and exchangably disposed in opposing side walls of a printer housing and across a front wall opening in the housing. The label applicator mechanism is pivoted into a label applying position in which the applicator mechanism receives and guides a printed label peeled from a web stock by a peeler rod along a label path extending from the peeler rod over a label shelf of the applicator mechanism to a position from which a label applicator roller of the applicator mechanism can engage a leading portion of the label for application to a surface to be labeled. The label applicator mechanism is pivoted into a web stock threading position to provide ready access by a user of the printer to facilitate threading of a leading portion of web stock along a web stock path from a roll past a printing mechanism and over the peeler rod to a web stock transport mechanism and to facilitate clearing of web stock jams or of label jams.
