Abstract: The drilling of highly angulated wellbores (with a rotary rig having a drill string terminated with a bit wherein drilling fluid is employed) is improved by employing in the highly angulated drill string a length of drill pipe which has a helical ridge disposed thereabout such that the flight of the helical ridge is wound so as to rise from the bit with the rotation of the drill string and the height of the helical ridge above the length of the surface of the drill pipe is 1 to 15 percent of the diameter of the drill pipe.
Abstract: A Kevlar.RTM. rope termination in which the rope is passed through an opening in a tension leg termination, is divided and laid over a rigid pin, being sealed around the pin with a resin. A flexible bearing member is located between the rope covered pin and a rigid support member contiguous with the inside of the termination, adjacent to the opening so that the rope covered pin can easily rotate within the bearing member without kinking the rope.

Abstract: Isotropic pitch containing mesogens is combined with a solvent and subjected to dense phase or supercritical conditions and the mesogens are phase separated. In one aspect the isotropic pitch containing mesogens is fluxed with a solvent to solubilize the mesogens, the flux mixture is filtered to remove nonsolubles and the mesogens are phase separated by use of the same solvent under dense phase or supercritical conditions of temperature and pressure. The phase separation conditions are such that the mesogens are recovered as mesophase.

Abstract: A catalyst and method is provided for the production of ultra-high molecular weight polymers characterized as having an inherent viscosity of above 12.0 by contacting ethylenically unsaturated monomers with a dual electron donor catalyst under polymerization conditions.
Abstract: Apparatus for carrying and positioning seismic detector equipment down a cased borehole and which includes a three component signal detector, azimuth sensing equipment and a particular type of borehole clamping arrangement that includes a combination of serrated locking pads, a contact rod and an inflatable bladder functioning in three point contact. An apparatus results that assures an improved form of three component geophone array that is lighter, easier handled and more reliably clamped within a borehole while having the additional azimuth sensing capability.
Abstract: Premium coke having a low coefficient of thermal expansion and containing reduced fluff coke is obtained by subjecting an aromatic mineral oil to reduced temperature delayed coking, thereafter converting uncoked oil in the coke drum to coke under delayed coking conditions by continuing coking in the presence of a aromatic mineral oil capable forming coke admixed with a non-coking material circulated through the coke drum as a heating fluid. After termination of the heating fluid, the coke in the coke drum is subjected to a heat soak in the presence of a non-coking material at an elevated temperature preferably above the delayed coking conditions.

Abstract: A compact well jack is particularly suitable for reciprocating a long stroke rod pump and in situations wherein horizontal area around the well head is limited. The pump jack has a frame with elongated guides, a lifting bar slidably disposed between the guides, a horizontal slot in the lifting bar, pulleys carrying an endless belt having a stud affixed opposite to a counter weight and extending into the slot such that rotation of the pulleys vertically reciprocates the lifting bar and sucker rod string while the stud moves horizontally within the slot.
Abstract: The friction loss in a conduit flowing a mixture of water, oil and gas is reduced by injecting into the mixture a water soluble friction reducing polymer.
Abstract: A separation system for separating oil and water components of a liquid mixture wherein the oil component is comprised of droplets of a less dense phase in a more dense water phase. The mixture is fed to separation devices including a hydrocyclone for generally reducing the oil in water concentration to less than 500 ppm. The underflow of the hydrocyclone is passed to a downstream flotation device for further separation as by settling, which may be further assisted by liberating gas in the mixture, in the flotation device, to adhere such gas to oil droplets and thereby carry such droplets to the surface of the device. Pressure of fluids leaving the hydrocyclone may be reduced before entering the flotation device. A residence vessel upstream of the hydrocyclone may be provided to precoalese the mixture prior to entering the hydrocyclone.
Abstract: A wire line cable in which composite rods are spaced apart and axially disposed between a flexible, elongated, membrane which can be pressurized and a flexible outer protective sheath surrounding but separate from the membrane.
Abstract: A method for processing three-dimensional seismic data to define areal boundaries of hydrocarbon reservoirs. 3-D Seismic data for an area having a producing well is examined to establish an attribute critical parameter that specifically relates to the reservoir structure. Having identified a parameter, the 3-D data can then be examined in a selected time window for presence of the critical parameter and X, Y gridding of its relative value. The relative values are then output to visual plot to provide a plan view of reservoir structure.
Abstract: A cyclone separator (10) of the dewatering type which comprises an elongated separating chamber (12) having an axis of symmetry between opposite first and second ends, the separating chamber being of greater cross-sectional dimension at the first end than at the second end. The cyclone separator further includes at least one inlet (20) which is adjacent the first end and at least one overflow outlet (25) for the less dense component and at least one underflow outlet (24) for the more dense component (24). The cyclone separator has a first section (14) which contains the feed inlet (20) and the first section is of reduced cross-sectional dimension d.sub.2 at its downstream end relative to the upstream end and is characterized in that the ratio of cross-sectional dimension of the overflow outlet for the less dense component d.sub.0 to the cross-sectional dimension of the first section at its downstream end d.sub.2 is as follows 0.25<D.sub.0 /d.sub.2 0.65.

Abstract: Oil compositions comprising crude oils, fuel oils, mineral oils and synthetic oils having high pour points are provided with one or more enhanced characteristics such as improved pour point, viscosity or viscosity index by the addition of a terpolymer comprising an alkyl ester of an unsaturated monocarboxylic acid, an olefinically unsaturated homo or heterocyclic-nitrogen compound, and an allyl acrylate or methacrylate or a perfluoroalkyl ethyl acrylate or methacrylate.
Abstract: A coupling interface between a two components of a spectrometer system having a monochromator, a spectrometer and a fiber cable therebetween includes a focusing lens and two crossed cylindrical lenses. The focusing lens is used to assure that the convergence angle of light entering the fiber is within the acceptance angle of the fiber. A dual lens system is used to collimate the light from the monochromator, first in one direction of divergence, then in a second direction of divergence. In a second embodiment, the focusing lens is used to collimate the light from the fiber optic cable. The dual lens system is used to converge the collimated light in two directions.
