Abstract: An alignment assembly for aligning heating lamps in a heating lamp assembly intended for use in an oven of a blow molding machine, the heating lamp assembly having a chassis removably positionable in at least one preselected location in the machine and including a vertical array of generally horizontally disposed lamps held in position by a lamp holder coupled to each end of each lamp. The alignment assembly has a baseplate including a coupling for coupling the chassis to the baseplate. A pair of standards are coupled to another plate movable relative to the baseplate projecting upward therefrom for holding a vertical scale and a plurality of vertically positionable and horizontally reciprocable gages indicate the relative position of the lamp holders.

Abstract: A plastic bottle having a neck portion defining an opening, a generally tubular bottle body portion depending from the neck portion, and an integral bottle bottom structure closing a lowermost end of the bottle body portion including a continuous standing ring circumscribing a central push-up region is blow molded from a preform which includes a generally tubular preform body portion having an outside wall face and an inside wall face and an integral preform bottom structure closing a lowermost end of the preform. The preform body includes a cylindrical thickened portion which upon blowing forms said continuous standing ring. The central push-up region of the plastic bottle is formed from that portion of the preform below the cylindrical thickened portion. The portion of the preform below the cylindrical thickened portion includes features contributing to enhanced bottle bottom strength while minimizing the amount of resin employed in the structure.

Abstract: A bottle stress analysis system using polarized light for determining stress levels of a transparent plastic bottle includes a rotation assembly for rotating the bottle. A polarized light source assembly is insertible into the bottle cavity to direct plane polarized light through the bottle wall and an analyzer assembly is positioned outside the bottle for measuring intensity of light passing through the bottle wall. In order to measure changes in polarization, the analyzer assembly has a polarization analyzer positioned to transmit the light to a photodetector. A mechanism for rotating either the polarized light source or the analyzer to determine maximum and minimum polarized light intensity at the photodetector facilitates determination of stress at a plurality of points along the bottle wall.

Abstract: A blow-molded container of thermoplastic resin has a hollow body with a generally cylindrical side wall portion rotationally symmetric about a longitudinal axis of the container. A shoulder portion integrally joins the side wall portion to a finish. An integral base merging with the side wall is defined by an outer surface comprising a plurality of downward projections separated from each other by generally arcuate segments extending essentially from the cylindrical side wall to the longitudinal axis of the container. The shoulder and sidewall portions are tempered during formation of the container to withstand hot filling at a temperature of at least about 170.degree. F. and subsequent introduction of a cryogenic liquid gas to provide an initial pressurization of at least 20 psi at the fill temperature.
