  • Patent number: 8636164
Abstract: A rupture disc for use in a pressure relief system includes a dome having a concave and a convex side and a circumferential flange associated therewith. At least one control score is formed or otherwise produced in the dome at a radial position between an apex of the dome and an outer circumference of the dome. At least one of a depth, a width, a length and the radial portion of the at least one control score is selectively controlled so that the depth, width, length, and/or radial position of the at least one control score controls the pressure at which the dome will start to collapse.

  • Publication number: 20100140238
Abstract: A method of forming a score line in a rupture disc using a laser is provided, wherein the method includes selecting a wavelength for the laser that maximizes absorption of the laser radiation by the disc material, selecting a pulse duration for the laser that maximizes a peak power of the laser, selecting a pulse repetition rate for the laser that reduces a heat affected zone of the rupture disc during ablation, and selecting the speed of relative motion between the laser and the rupture disc. The score line is ablated in the rupture disc using the laser to remove material from the rupture disc as vapor without melting or oxidizing disc material adjacent the material being removed.

  • Patent number: 6431383
Abstract: An improved reverse rupture disc for use as a safety pressure relief device is provided. The disc is defined by an annular flat flange region, a concave-convex disc dome region and a transition region that joins the disc-shaped flat flange region to the concave-convex disc dome region. One or more deformations may be formed at or near the apex of the disc dome region for weakening the disc to the point that incidental damage to the disc will not weaken the disc any further, thereby ensuring that the disc will reverse at a certain pressure, and no lower. The disc may also formed with one or more irregular transition regions at the base of the disc and a partial circular groove in the transition region. The irregular transition region of the disc cooperates with a shear enhancing means such as a protrusion or notch formed in a support ring or disc holder disposed downstream of the disc to sever the disc dome from the annular flat flange region along the groove in the transition region.

  • Patent number: 4759460
Abstract: A rupture disc system comprises a ruptue disc including a dome portion and a flange portion interconnected by a transition region and a mounting mechanism for mounting the rupture disc by the flange portion thereof in a pressure relieving vent. The rupture disc includes a thickness reducing groove at least partially circumferentially surrounding the dome portion and located in the transition region thereof. Preferably, the rupture disc is of the reverse buckling type and the groove does not completely surround the dome portion so as to define a tab or hinge within that part of the transition region which is ungrooved or not as deeply grooved as a remainder of the transition region. In addition, the slope or radius of curvature may be increased in the region of the tab. The rupture disc also includes an indentation on the dome portion. The indentation is preferably greatest on the dome portion at a location spaced from the transition region and directly between the tab and a crown of the dome portion.

  • Patent number: 4612739
Abstract: A low pressure venting panel acts to safely vent a pressure vessel, such as a bag house, from overpressure conditions. The venting panel is particularly responsive and predictable at low pressures. The panel includes a thin rupture body with a central group of apertures and slit lines emanating from the apertures. A thin sealing membrane is bonded to one surface of the rupture body at least in the area of the slits. The characteristics of the sealing membrane enable the membrane to resist expansion in the area of the slits when pressure is applied to the rupture body, thereby resisting rupture of the membrane up to the design rupture limit of the venting panel. Various aperture patterns in the center of the rupture body are provided to facilitate predictable opening. The slits are divided into segments connected by bridges to help prevent the slits from separating and the sealing membrane from creeping through the slits prior to rupture.

The location of the unsupported sector is approximately centered relative to the tab or hinge.

  • Patent number: 4580691
Abstract: A safety pressure relief assembly of the rupture disc type guards against pressure differentials, beyond a predetermined range in a vent system, and includes a relief disc perforated to permit reverse flow without rupture, a sealing disc positioned adjacent the relief disc and blocking positive flow through the perforations, a support member with a stay structure positioned to support the sealing disc nested within the relief disc, and a cutting member positioned to cut the sealing disc at a predetermined vacuum within the vent system. The relief disc has a concave surface and a convex surface. When a predetermined vacuum pressure differential is applied to the assembly, the sealing disc and the support structure are inverted to project away from the relief disc.

  • Patent number: 4505289
Abstract: A rupture disc apparatus comprises a rupture disc holding cartridge and a fixed receptacle for receiving the cartridge. The receptacle is positioned in a vent so as to communicate on opposite sides thereof with the vent. The cartridge is removable from and replaceable into the receptacle when no pressure exists within the vent so as to position the rupture disc to block passage of fluid through the vent when the disc is unruptured. A first of the receptacle or cartridge includes circumferential seating rings on opposite sides thereof and the other of the receptacle or cartridge includes seats for the rings. The seats and rings are positioned adjacent to the vent. The rings are urged into locking position in the seats by pressure from within the shaft and are manually removable when substantially atmospheric pressure exists within the vent.

  • Patent number: 4446883
Abstract: An end loaded ball valve having a fluid channel and a ball moving gate with a ball that seats against a valve seat to block passage of fluid through the valve. The valve also includes a removable retainer in the flow channel of the valve. The retainer, when in functional position in the valve, holds the valve seat in position in the valve and, when removed from the valve, allows access to the seat and the ball through the channel. The gate is designed to hold the ball during operation of the valve but to release the ball for removal through the channel for repair or replacement.

  • Patent number: 4444214
Abstract: A self-sealing and self-positioning replaceable rupture disc cartridge arrangement includes a cartridge receptacle mounted in a pressure relief vent having spaced apart opposite end walls with circumferential positioning grooves on respective internal surfaces thereof and a cartridge assembly having a rupture disc mounted therein for removable placement within the cartridge receptacle. The cartridge assembly includes an annular cartridge body having a cylindrical passage therethrough with a shoulder at one end thereof to retain disc seat rings, having the rupture disc placed therebetween, within the cartridge body. The cartridge includes seal mounting rings which have circumferential seals thereon, which are resiliently retractable into circumferential channels at opposite ends of the cartridge body, and which cooperate with the positioning grooves on the cartridge receptacle walls whereby upon placement of the cartridge within the receptacle, the seal rings snap into the positioning grooves.

  • Patent number: 4408194
Abstract: A capacitive pressure relief rupture disc monitor for use in detecting the rupture of an electrically conductive rupture disc installed in a pressure relief vent includes a flat metal loop positioned in spaced relation to the rupture disc and forming a capacitor therewith. A capacitance sensor is connected to the disc and the loop and is operative to generate an output signal in response to a selected change in the capacitance between the loop and the disc as a result of movement of portions of the disc during rupture thereof. The output signal from the capacitance sensor is operative to trigger an alarm to thereby indicate the rupture of the disc.
