  • Patent number: 6821092
Abstract: A scroll compressor has a biasing chamber which contains a pressurized fluid. The pressurized fluid within the chamber biases the two scroll members together. A valve assembly is in communication with this biasing chamber and releases the pressurized fluid on demand to remove the load, biasing the two scroll members together. When the biasing load is removed, the two scroll members separate, creating a leakage path between discharge and suction to reduce the capacity of the scroll compressor.

  • Patent number: 6775995
Abstract: A method of determining thermal performance of a condenser and a condensing unit within a cooling system includes selecting the condenser and the condensing unit from a condensing unit database. A compressor is selected from a compressor database based on at least one of capacity, electrical characteristics and refrigerant flowing through the cooling system. Simulation points for the cooling system are determined and condensing unit characteristics and compressor characteristics are processed based on user-specified simulation points to provide thermal performance data for the condenser or condensing unit.

  • Patent number: 6773242
Abstract: A scroll compresssor incorporates a vapor injection system where only one vapor injection port is utilized. The single vapor injection port injects refrigerant vapor into two of the initially formed enclosed spaces. The scrolls of the scroll compressor are designed with asymmetric wraps where the non-orbiting scroll wrap extends angularly further than the orbiting scroll wrap.

  • Patent number: 6761541
Abstract: A foot plate for mounting a compressor includes a mounting plate, a pair of upwardly extending flanges, a pair of downwardly extending flanges and an upwardly extending mounting flange. The mounting flange is utilized to secure a compressor by being attached to the shell of the compressor. When tandem compressor assemblies are used, the pair of upwardly extending flanges provide clearance for a pair of rails which interconnect the tandem compressors without having to modify the foot plates. In one embodiment, the foot plates are welded or brazed to the rails. In another embodiment, a set of grommets position the foot plate on the rail and the foot plate is bolted to the rail. In another embodiment, a set of grommets position and secure the foot plate to the rail.

  • Patent number: 6758050
Abstract: A refrigeration/air conditioning system includes a compressor having a motor protector which stops the compressor's motor when it senses an out of specification condition. A diagnostic system of the refrigeration/air conditioning system monitors the status of the motor protector. The diagnostic system includes logic circuitry that diagnoses the type of problem the compressor or the system is having based upon the running times and status of the motor in conjunction with the times and status of the tripped motor protector. The diagnostic system also includes either a discharge pressure sensor or a condenser temperature sensor, an ambient air sensor and a voltage sensor. The sensors provide information to the diagnostic system which enables it to determine where a system fault has occurred.

  • Patent number: 6745584
Abstract: A cooling system controller controls the capacity of a variable capacity compressor based upon the temperature of a housing being cooled, the suction pressure of the compressor or both of these criteria. The cooling system controller is capable of controlling either single-evaporator or multiple-evaporator refrigeration systems. The multiple-evaporator systems can have evaporators of similar temperatures or of mixed temperatures. The controller also allows the use of one or more condenser fans that are operated in a lead/lag fashion to control the cooling capability of the system.

  • Patent number: 6709247
Abstract: A compressor is driven by a drive shaft rotatably supported by a main bearing housing and a lower bearing housing. The main bearing housing positions a main bearing at or near a nodal point of the drive shaft during vibration by the drive shaft. The main bearing housing is designed such that the main bearing pivots during the vibration of the drive shaft in order to maintain surface contact between the bearing and the drive shaft to eliminate edge loading of the bearing.

  • Patent number: 6709244
Abstract: A scroll type machine incorporates a unique system for monitoring the status of a valve which is used to control the capacity of the compressor. The valve functions to open and close a fluid passage between two areas of the compressor for capacity modulation. By monitoring the temperature of the fluid after the valve, it can be determined whether or not the valve is functioning. If the temperature fluctuates, the valve is functioning. If the temperature is constant, the valve is not operating properly. Another embodiment monitors the pressure within the fluid line controlled by the valve.
