Abstract: The present invention relates to a process of making a starch crosslinked with sodium trimetaphosphate or with a combination of sodium trimetaphosphate and sodium tripolyphosphate. The reaction has increased efficiency over the standard crosslinking process and/or reduced phosphorus effluent.
Abstract: This invention relates to thermally inhibited polysaccharides and improved processes of preparing them, wherein the improvement is dehydrating the polysaccharides under increased pressure and/or increased effective oxygen concentrations to produce compositions of improved organoleptic properties, including color, flavor and odor.
Abstract: The present invention relates to methods for preparing high purity gentiooligosaccharides, high purity gentiooligosaccharides obtained therefrom, and uses thereof. The methods of the present invention involve: adding a low purity gentiooligosaccharide to a liquid medium; subjecting the liquid medium to inoculation with a microorganism, followed by incubation and fermentation to consume glucose that is contained in the low purity gentiooligosaccharide; and subjecting the resulting fermentation broth to filtration and purification. According to the method of the present invention, high purity gentiooligosaccharides having a purity of at least 90% that can be used as alternatives to foods such as cocoa, chocolate, coffee, beer, tea, bread or confectionery product, and beverage or the main ingredients thereof.

Abstract: A method of, and apparatus for, determining properties relating to multi-phase systems are provided. In the method, an array of sample tubes each containing a sample of a multi-phase system is formed. An iterative process is used to generate at least two data sets of transmitted and/or backscattered values for each sample and the data sets for each sample are processed to determine at least one property of the sample. The apparatus has a support on which an array of sample tubes each containing a sample of a multi-phase system may be assembled. It also has a wave source and at least one wave detector for detecting transmitted and/or backscattered values for each sample and computer means for iteratively operating said wave source and said at least one detector to generate data sets of transmitted and/or backscattered values for each sample and for processing the data sets for each sample to determine at least one property of the sample.
Abstract: This invention provides hybrid maize plant designated PPVO1864. This invention further provides hybrid seed of PPVO1864, a representative sample of which has been deposited under ATCC Accession Number PTA-9367, hybrid plants produced from such seed, and variants, mutants, and trivial modifications to hybrid PPVO1864, as well as methods of using the hybrid and products produced from the hybrid.

Abstract: It has now been found that emulsions having a discrete phase volume fraction of 60% to 67% with excellent stability may be prepared using at least one low molecular weight surfactant. Such emulsions have high oil loading and a small mean particle size of less than 0.2 microns. Further, such emulsions may be used in beverages without weighting agents.
Abstract: The method of forming a filter cake from a slurry comprising the steps of feeding the slurry into a filter housing, wherein the filter housing includes a plurality of vertical filter elements; pressing the slurry into the filter housing against the filter elements resulting in i) a filtrate passing through the filter elements and exiting out an exhaust port of the filter housing; ii) forming a solid cake on the filter elements; feeding a wash liquid into the filter housing while draining out the slurry by opening the slurry drain valve; closing the slurry drain valve and then continually feeding wash liquid through the cake and into the filter tube of the filter housing; stopping the feed of wash liquid; introducing a gas into the filter housing and draining out the wash liquid by opening a bottom drain valve; stopping the gas flow and opening a drain to exit most of the gas and remaining wash liquid; opening the bottom cake discharge valve; and back pulsing by a gas to break and to release the filter cake fr
Abstract: This invention is directed to a process for making a thermally inhibited polysaccharide by dehydrating a polysaccharide to substantially anhydrous or anhydrous conditions and thermally inhibiting the substantially anhydrous or anhydrous polysaccharide at a temperature of 100° C. or greater for a time sufficient to inhibit the polysaccharide in an oxygen enriched concentration of at least 6.5 moles/m3.

Abstract: The present invention relates to a process for purifying starches. More particularly, the invention relates to a method of removing off-flavors, off-odors, and off-colors from starches by extraction of the components causing the off-flavors, off-odors, and off-colors with a fluid in the supercritical or liquid phase.

Abstract: Method and apparatus for parallel dispensing of powder samples is described. Powder samples are dispensed into at least two powder sample holders, each said sample holder having a through passage which preferably generally tapers from a first aperture through which powder is introduced into said passage and a second aperture through which powder, when permitted to do so, flows from said passage. The lower apertures of the sample holders are preferably sealed using a resilient film. The powder samples are dispensed by substantially simultaneously perforating the film covering each aperture and agitating the powder samples to cause them to flow from their respective sample holders. Also disclosed are a method of generating a library of powder samples and a library of powder samples.
Abstract: The present invention is directed to a dry composition which allows delivery of active agents with good bioavailability. These compositions are prepared by emulsifying the active agent using liposome technology known in the art and then encapsulating with a modified starch. The modified starch is prepared by enzymatic hydrolysis of starch after the preparation of a starch derivative containing a hydrophobic group or both a hydrophobic and a hydrophilic group. The resultant composition is a dry powder with excellent bioavailability. Further, the composition has good load levels and stability.
