Publication number: 20030001990Abstract: Illumination systems (11) are disclosed which provide scrolling progressive color change on a liquid crystal panel (21), such as a LCoS panel. The systems use transmissive color filters (30, 31, 33) which form an assembly (13) which is rotated about a rotation axis (37). Incident light from a light source (15, 17) passes through the filters and reflects from a reflecting surface (39). As a result of this reflection, the system's optical axis (41, 43) is turned from an orientation substantially perpendicular to the rotation axis to an orientation which does not intersect a filter. Such turning of the optical axis allows colored light to be easily removed from the assembly and avoids problems with color mixing at boundaries between filters as occurs for systems in which light passes through two filters.Type: ApplicationFiled: June 20, 2002Publication date: January 2, 2003Applicant: Corning Precision Lens IncorporatedInventors: Simon Magarill, Todd S. Publication number: 20030003847Abstract: A polishing system for polishing a surface of a substrate, such as the surface of an optical pin mold, to a desired surface finish and profile under the automated control of a computer during a polishing cycle. The polishing system includes a polishing spindle assembly that holds and rotates a polishing tool that is contacted under pressure with a surface of the mold pin. A torque sensor is associated with the polishing spindle assembly to sense a torque on the polishing tool during the polishing cycle. The polishing system further includes a feedback control system that dynamically adjusts the position of the polishing spindle assembly in response to the torque sensed by the torque sensor to maintain a substantially constant torque on the polishing tool during the polishing cycle.Type: ApplicationFiled: June 28, 2001Publication date: January 2, 2003Applicant: Corning Precision Lens, Inc.Inventors: Allen Y. Patent number: 6499887Abstract: A preassembled multifiber connector is provided that includes a connector housing and a windowless multifiber ferrule that is substantially rectangular in lateral cross-section. The windowless multifiber ferrule can be at least partially disposed within an internal cavity defined by the connector housing to thereby form a multifiber connector that is free of optical fibers. Thus, the multifiber connector is capable of being preassembled prior to inserting the plurality of optical fibers into the optical fiber bores defined by the windowless multifiber ferrule. A corresponding method of preassembling a multifiber connector is therefore also provided according to the present invention. A ferrule is also provided that is capable of being selectively converted from a windowless configuration to a windowed configuration. The ferrule of this embodiment includes a ferrule body that not only defines at least one optical fiber bore, but that also defines a well extending through a side surface of the ferrule body.Type: GrantFiled: December 31, 2001Date of Patent: December 31, 2002Assignee: Corning Cable Systems LLCInventors: David L. Patent number: 6501887Abstract: A fiber optic cable having both water blocking and flame retardant properties that is particularly useful for indoor or indoor/outdoor applications. In one embodiment, the fiber optic cable includes at least one buffer tube, at least one optical fiber disposed within the buffer tube, a composite tape surrounding the buffer tube that comprises a layer formed of an inherently flame retardant material and at least one coating a water swellable material, and a jacket surrounding the composite tape. The fiber optic cable can also include a water blocking element disposed within the buffer tube. The water swellable coatings of the composite tape and the water blocking element within the buffer tube therefore inhibit water migration along the length of the cable, while the flame retardant layer of the composite tape provides fire resistance.Type: GrantFiled: August 30, 2000Date of Patent: December 31, 2002Assignee: Corning Cable Systems LLCInventors: Anne G. Patent number: 6499888Abstract: A laser pump module has a ridge waveguide chip with a ridge width that is greater than 4 micrometers (&mgr;m). This is a relatively wide ridge for this class of laser chips. Specifically, especially for signal lasers, narrow ridge widths are used in order to control lateral and transverse mode shape and size. In the present invention, however, where a chip is used for pump applications, a wider ridge is used to increase the laser effective gain volume and decrease the loss associated with the lowest order transverse mode to thus maximize the useful power and light that is coupled into the fiber pigtail.Type: GrantFiled: December 20, 1999Date of Patent: December 31, 2002Assignee: Corning Lasertron, Inc.Inventor: Yongan Wu

Patent number: 6497118Abstract: In furnaces for producing high purity fused silica glass boules, the refractory in the area of the burner holes reaches such elevated temperatures that cause impurities to leach out and the dissociation of the refractory, causing contamination of the silica glass. In order to reduce the temperature of the burner hole refractory, a porous insert or liner is positioned within the burner hole and a suitable gas is supplied thereto. The gas diffuses through the porous liner and not only cools the liner and refractory, but also forms a boundary layer along an inside surface of the insert that prevents particle buildup. The cooling of the insert and surrounding burner hole refractory prevents contamination of the silica glass from the refractory.Type: GrantFiled: September 19, 2000Date of Patent: December 24, 2002Assignee: Corning IncorporatedInventor: Paul M. Schermerhorn
