Abstract: The invention is an optically transparent organopolysiloxane resin with a large amount of a uniformly dissolved and dispersed optically-functional organic material. The compatibility of the optically functional material is achieved by modifying it by addition of alkoxysilylalkyl groups to aromatic groups of optically-functional organic compounds such phthalocyanines, porphyrins, tetraphenylbutadienes, axobenzenes, bis(4-dimethylaminodithiobenzyl)nickel and anthracenes. The compositions contain 20 to 200 parts by weight of the modified optically-functional organic compounds per 100 parts by weight of the organopolysiloxane resin. The composition may be formed into a specified shape, solvents evaporated, and cured by heat.
Abstract: Disclosed are coating compositions which include a preceramic silicon-containing material dissolved in short chain linear siloxanes. The compositions have a long shelf life and are useful for forming coatings which are thick and of good quality.

Abstract: A method of spontaneously forming a highly stable clear microemulsion by combining (i) water; (ii) a volatile cyclic methyl siloxane or volatile linear methyl siloxane; and (iii) a silicone polyether surfactant. The amounts of each component are such that the composition is in the form of a microemulsion. The volatile methyl siloxane is present in the microemulsion in the form of particles having an average diameter of less than about 100 nanometers. The microemulsion is useful in personal care products.
Abstract: A single mode optical fiber suitable for use in an amplified fiber optic system which includes an inner glass core doped with a rare earth element and an outer transparent glass cladding. The fiber exhibits a plurality of mode coupling sites formed at regular intervals along the length of the fiber which provides for a reduced DOP. The sites are formed by a twist at regular intervals along the fiber length by applying a torque to the fiber. The method of forming the fiber is also disclosed.
Abstract: A room-temperature-curable silicone elastomer composition obtained from diorganopolysiloxane that is endblocked by silanol at both molecular chain terminals and diorganopolysiloxane that is endblocked at one molecular chain terminal by silanol and at the other terminal by trialkylsiloxy; an alkoxy functional silane; an organopolysiloxane resin; a curing catalyst; and a diorganopolysiloxane that contains at least 2 carboxyl groups. The room-temperature-curable silicone elastomer composition has an excellent pre-cure workability and cures into a low-modulus, high-elongation silicone elastomer.
Abstract: An apparatus for folding a fibrous insulation batt having a length and a width is disclosed. The batt has first and second sections, where each section is approximately one half the length of the batt. The apparatus comprises a lower conveyor for conveying folded batts in a first direction, and an upper conveyor which is positioned above the lower conveyor and move in the first direction to define a folded batt exit path. The apparatus further comprises a folding member for folding the insulation batt, where the folding member is adapted to contact the batt across its width. The folding member is mounted for movement to initially push the batt in a second direction, and then subsequently push the batt in the first direction, thereby pushing the batt along the folded batt exit path. The movement of the folding member folds the batt so that the first section of the folded batt is generally parallel to and contacting the second section.

Abstract: The invention relates to methods and apparatus useful for making color filters for liquid crystal display panels. A multicolored ink pattern is deposited to a substrate while in a deformable state, flattened during the deposition process, and the deformed, more uniform shape of the printed dot is thereafter retained, preferably by curing during deposition. The transfer layer is preferably formed on a collector roll. A plurality of colored ink patterns is then transferred to the collector roll, preferably from a single pattern roll having multiple patterns thereon, to form the multicolor image that will become the color filter. This multicolored image is then transferred to the substrate.

Abstract: This invention is a strand of silicate glass fibers with a carbon skin or sheath around each glass fiber of the strand. The invention uses hydrocarbon pyrolysis with silicate fiber glass manufacturing to produce fibers using conventional melt-bushing technology. The formation of a carbon skin or sheath on the silicate glass fibers offers numerous advantages. For example, pyrolyzing hydrocarbons is endothermic. Heat is removed in the process and fibers are cooled faster. This helps to achieve higher throughput.

Abstract: A compact monolithic interferometric switch such as a Mach-Zehnder switch is formed such that one of the waveguide paths between the input and output couplers contains a material having exhibits a resonant nonlinearity, whereby its refractive index changes when pump power propagates through it. Each of the waveguide paths has a different propagation constant whereby signal light is subjected to a different delay in each path when no pump power is propagating through the rare nonlinear path. An input signal applied to the input of the switch appears at a first output terminal when the pump power does not propagate through the nonlinear path, and it appears at a second output terminal when the pump power is applied to the nonlinear path. Switching occurs at relatively low levels of pump power.

Abstract: A gauging system is provided for measuring glass flatness and thickness, in which a glass sheet is accurately supported on a reference plane, and fiber optic sensors are lowered toward the glass to sense the location of the upper and lower surfaces of the glass sheet. The sensors send signals, which are representative of the locations of the surfaces, to a central processing unit which is used to calculate thickness and/or flatness of the glass sheet.

Abstract: Fused silica boules (19) having improved homogeneity are produced by causing the boule (19) to flow radially during its formation to achieve local mixing between portions of the boule which may have experienced different laydown conditions. The mixing is achieved by one or a combination of: (1) use of a containment vessel (13) having a gently sloping containment wall (22); (2) use of a containment vessel (13) whose inner radius (r.sub.v) is substantially larger than the outermost radius (r.sub.b) of the burners (14) used to produce the boule (19); and/or (3) maintaining the boule (19) at a sufficiently high temperature during laydown so that radial flow is achieved with a minimum head height of glass. Large blanks having high homogeneity can be made from such boules, e.g., blanks having diameters above 200 millimeters and .DELTA.n values of less than 0.25.times.10.sup.-6.
