  • Patent number: 8929100
Abstract: In an electrical power converter, an input circuit performs switching for converting a supply voltage of a power source to alternating-polarity voltage pulses which are applied to the primary winding of a transformer. Each voltage pulse is controlled (e.g., pulse width or amplitude is adjusted) based on a detected value of current flow in the primary winding, where the value has been detected an even-numbered plurality of voltage pulses previously. Any DC component of current flow in the primary winding, caused by manufacturing deviations between switching elements in the input circuit, can thereby be suppressed, and DC flux bias in the transformer thereby suppressed.

  • Patent number: 8928035
Abstract: The invention provides semiconductor materials including a gallium nitride material layer formed on a silicon substrate and methods to form the semiconductor materials. The semiconductor materials include a transition layer formed between the silicon substrate and the gallium nitride material layer. The transition layer is compositionally-graded to lower stresses in the gallium nitride material layer which can result from differences in thermal expansion rates between the gallium nitride material and the substrate. The lowering of stresses in the gallium nitride material layer reduces the tendency of cracks to form. Thus, the invention enables the production of semiconductor materials including gallium nitride material layers having few or no cracks. The semiconductor materials may be used in a number of microelectronic and optical applications.

  • Patent number: 8931056
Abstract: A service accessible by a set of entities may be provided to each entity at a different service level (e.g., with a different set of privileges) based on the privilege level of the entity. However, many users may attempt to perform malicious activities through the service, and may do so with impunity if the penalties of detection are inconsequential. Instead, privilege levels of entities may be established based on the claims of assets having identifiable value. Such claims may be established by submitting an asset identifier to the service, such as proof of a software license identified by the submission of a license key purchased at a substantial cost. The penalties of malicious activities performed by such users may include the invalidation of such asset identifiers. Establishing the privilege levels of respective entities in this manner raises the penalties, and hence the deterrence, of attempted malicious use of the service.

  • Patent number: 8924026
Abstract: Methods, systems, and apparatuses are provided for controlling an environmental maintenance system that includes a plurality of sensors and a plurality of actuators. The operation levels of the actuators can be determined by optimizing a penalty function. As part of the penalty function, the sensor values can be compared to reference values. The optimized values of the operation levels can account for energy use of actuators at various operation levels and predicted differences of the sensor values relative to the reference values at various operation levels. The predicted difference can be determined using a transfer model. An accuracy of the transfer model can be determined by comparing predicted values to measured values. This accuracy can be used in determining new operational levels from an output of the transfer model (e.g., attenuating the output of the transfer model based on the accuracy).
